Chancellor College Faculty of Education

The Faculty of Education is one of the five faculties at Chancellor College of the University of Malawi. The Faculty shares the broad mission of Chancellor College which is to “create and share knowledge by engaging in teaching, research, consultancy and outreach activities as a responsive to the needs of Malawi and the region” (Chancellor College Strategic Plan, 2013-18).  Specifically, the core business of the Faculty of Education is to prepare and develop human resources required to support, sustain, and revitalize the primary and secondary education sectors in Malawi and Africa; through teaching and conducting basic and applied research, in response to the needs of Malawi and Africa, in order to inform theory and practice in the education sector.

Departments

The Faculty of Education is made up of three strategic departments and these are:

  • Curriculum and Teaching Studies (CATS);
  • Education Foundations (EDF);
  • and the Centre for Educational Research and Training (CERT).

Partnerships

Furthermore and over the years, the Faculty of Education has established collaborative links and partnerships with both local and international institutions to advance its strategic advancement in teaching and research.  For instance, at the international level, the following are the existing links and their foci: University of Strathclyde in Scotland, UK (on capacity building in primary teacher education at both Bachelors and Masters levels); A Collaborative project with University of Stavanger in Norway (on Mathematics teacher education), A collaborative project of four Universities: University of Malawi, University of Ulster, University of Mondlane and Makerere University (on developing more effective school and University Partnership in initial teacher education, with a particular focus on numeracy and literacy); Africa-Asia Universities Partnerships on Education and Development: a network of universities in Africa and Asia on Education Research; Volda University-College in Norway (on capacity building for democracy).
Locally, Faculty is collaborating with UNICEF on the Child friendly Schools Project, being implemented by CERT. The project covers 10 districts in Malawi.
