African Leadership College ALC Entry Requirements

What are we looking for in an ALU applicant?

ALU has a diverse student community and that doesn’t only mean that they come from many different countries. It also means that our students come from diverse cultures, traditions, socio-economic backgrounds with diverse passions and interests. Some of our students are musicians and athletes while others are artists, mathematicians and computer geeks. What binds them all is their desire to grow and make an impact on the world around them. When we review applications we don’t look for only one thing – we consider each application with its own unique story and context.
We strongly believe that Africa is transformed when people from all backgrounds and walks of life come together and collaborate to solve tough problems. That’s why ALU is not just for Africans. We welcome young people from around the world who are excited about ALU’s learning philosophy and want to set a solid foundation for their future and their careers.

Here are some of the things we’re looking for in an ALU applicant:

  • Age

Applicants to ALU must have graduated from secondary school and be between the ages of 18 – 23 years old.

  • Academic Potential

ALU’s curriculum is unique, yet rigorous. Our focus on developing critical skills requires that students have a curious and inquiring mind, and are willing to work hard to improve and grow. We know that good grades alone are not the mark of a true leader – so if you are not in the top 10% but you have demonstrated tremendous growth, strong potential to learn and a drive to succeed then apply to ALU.

  • Leadership Potential

Leaders come in all shapes and forms and we are not only looking for those who are at the front of the pack for everyone to see. We also want to see those who quietly take action when they see a problem without waiting for someone else to solve it for them.

  • Curiosity and Passion

We’re looking for young people who are excited about something. It could be anything – playing the piano, football, the debate club, volunteering in disadvantaged communities or mountain climbing. We’re not looking for activities that you think will look good on an application, we want to know about what you’re passionate about because it tells us more about you as an individual.

  • Drive and Motivation

At ALU, you are responsible for your own education and will be asked to engage in every aspect of your learning. We are looking for students who get excited at the prospect of driving their own learning, seeking out information and working hard to develop their skills.
