About Chancellor College Department of Economics (DOE)
History
The Department of Economics (DOE) at Chancellor College in Zomba is the main institution for training economists in Malawi through its undergraduate and post-graduate programmes.
Since its establishment in 1965 until recently it has been running mainly the undergraduate programme. In 1992, the DOE started offering post-graduate courses and it is one of the departments in the University of Malawi with a long history of offering postgraduate courses on a sustainable basis.
Since 1993 the MA (Economics) programme has graduated over 100 economists from Malawi and other African countries including Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Kenya, Sudan, Uganda and Liberia. Some of them are senior managers in the private and public services and international organisations; others have since completed PhD or are pursuing their PhD programmes at the DOE or elsewhere.
Programmes
The DOE offers undergraduate and post-graduate training in economics. The undergraduate programme is the main activity of the DOE as part of the Faculty of Social Science. The undergraduate programme is a four year programme largely financed through Malawi Government subvention to the University of Malawi.
The DOE offers introductory and intermediate courses in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Mathematics for Economists, Statistics for Economists, The Economy of Malawi, History of Economic Thought and Econometrics, and applied courses such as Public Finance, Development Economics, International Trade, International Finance, Natural Resource Economics, Economics Planning and Management, Indigenous Economics, Environmental Economics, Industrial Economics, Financial and Managerial Accounting, Agricultural Economics, Health Economics, Transport Economics, Philosophy of Economics, Financial Economics, Labour Economics, Education Economics, Microfinance and Entrepreneurship and quantitative methods.
