Background
The Department of Forestry in the Faculty of Environmental Sciences is the first to offer BSc level courses in Forestry in Malawi.  Its first two programmes have been tailor-made to address the immediate needs of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Affairs.  TA four year generic programme has been launched (2003) in an attempt to respond to the long term capacity needs in the environmental sector in the country.    The Forestry Department at Mzuzu University is geared to respond to training needs and face on challenges of pioneering BSc Forestry training in Malawi in Responding to dynamic institutional and policy changes that taking place.
Mission
The mission of the Forestry Department is to ensure the application of sound technical and scientific knowledge to forestry development in Malawi through research, teaching and dissemination of knowledge and provision of expert services.
Services
We offer a BSc Forestry degree programme which takes 4 years for school leavers and 2 to 3 years full-time for serving officers.  We also offer refresher and tailor-made short courses in various fields of forestry or environment.
The Department of Forestry also carries out outreach programmes and research in support of institutional and policy dynamics in the fields of environment and forestry.
Research programmes
The goals and content of the research programmes will reflect a comprehensive national agenda for strategic and applied research. This will follow an orientation towards a systems approach.  Together, the programmes will aim at understanding and explaining the basic processes in addition to determining and predicting the potentials of forestry.

Entry requirements

Duration

∙ Certificate in Forestry, Agriculture or other natural resources related field obtained from a

4 years

recognised institution of higher learning

Not less than two years relevant work experience. At MSCE, they should have at least credits in Biology, Mathematics or Additional Mathematics, Physical Science or Chemistry and Physics or General Science, English (Language or Literature)

and any other two credits obtained in not more than two sittings

Bachelor of Science (Forestry)

Upgrading

Bachelor of Science (Renewable Energy Technologies) – Upgrading

Bachelor of Science (Fisheries)

Upgrading

∙ Diploma in Forestry, Agriculture or other natural resources related field obtained from a 3 years recognized institution

Not less than two years relevant work experience. At MSCE, they should have at least credits in Biology, Mathematics or Additional Mathematics, Physical Science or Chemistry and Physics or General Science, English (Language or Literature)

and any other two credits obtained in not more than two sittings

Diploma in Engineering or its equivalent, obtained from a recognised institution of higher

Those with 3 years Diploma from recognised institutions of higher learning may be considered for a 2-year duration.

Relevant work experience would be an added advantage

∙ Certificate in Fisheries Management/Science, Agriculture, Animal Science or equivalents, 4 years obtained from a recognized institution of higher learning

MSCE with at least six credits in English, Biology, Mathematics, Physical Science/General Science or Chemistry and any other two science subjects

Relevant work experience would be an added advantage

Bachelor of Science (Fisheries)

– Upgrading

Bachelor of Science in Land Management (Land Surveying)–Upgrading

Bachelor of Science in Land Management (Estates Management)–Upgrading

Bachelor of Science in Land Management (Physical Planning)–Upgrading

∙ Diploma in Fisheries Science, Agriculture, Animal Science or equivalents, obtained from a 2 years recognized institution of higher learning

∙ Certificate in Land Administration, Land Surveying obtained from a recognised institution,

Malawi School Certificate of Education with at least credit in English (Language or Literature) and with two credits in either Mathematics or Additional Mathematics, Geography, Physical Science or Physics and Chemistry or General Science, and

Relevant work experience

∙ Certificate in Land Administration, Property Investment, Valuation, Estate Agency, Property

Management, Property Development and Facilities Management obtained from a recognised

institution of higher learning or any other subject related to real estate OR

a Malawi School Certificate of Education with not more than 30 points and at least credits in the following: Mathematics or Additional Mathematics, Geography, Agriculture and

at least 2 years relevant work experience

Certificate in Land Administration, Physical Planning, Environmental Management, 4 years Development Control or Housing Studies obtained from a recognised institution of higher

learning.

OR
