Institute of Distance Education Admissions Requirements

1.Bachelor of Arts Humanities
Duration: 5-6 years
Entrance Requirements: Six passes of the IGCSE/SGCSE examinations five of these including English Language, must be passed at C Grade or better. Two of the five subjects must include the following: English Literature, Geography, History, Religious Knowledge, French and SiSwati.
OR The Mature Age Entry Scheme applicable to degree programmes.

2. Diploma in Commerce
Duration: 4 years
Entrance Requirements: for holders of IGCSE/SGCSE: Four credit passes which should include Mathematics and English Language and two other relevant subjects.
OR a credit pass in the Certificate in Commerce Programme.
OR a pass in the Certificate in Commerce Programme plus two years of relevant experience after completing the Certificate Programme.
OR a recognised equivalent qualification.
OR the Mature Age Entry Scheme applicable to Diploma Programmes.

3. Bachelor of Commerce
Duration: 3 years

Entrance Requirements: All candidates wishing to enrol in the Bachelor of Commerce Degree should have successfully completed the Diploma in Commerce and have obtained an overall of 60% or above, and a Credit in Principles of Marketing, or Organizational Behaviour or Financial Accounting. Candidates with a Pass in the Diploma in Commerce need a minimum of two years relevant working experience before being allowed to transfer to the Degree. A letter should accompany such candidates’ applications from their employer confirming the required two years working experience.

4. Diploma in Law
Duration 3 years
Entrance Requirements: At least three credit passes in IGCSE /SGCSE/O’level including English Language.
OR at least three passes in O-Level including English Language and a minimum of three years relevant work experience. A letter should accompany such candidates’ applications from their employer confirming the required three years working experience.
OR a Certificate in Law with credit or better from UNISWA or any other institution approved by Senate.
OR a pass in Certificate in Law plus one-year relevant work experience after completing the Certificate.
OR the Mature Age Entry Scheme applicable to Diploma Programmes

5. Certificate in Portuguese
Duration: 2 years
Entrance Requirements: Junior Certificate or a recognised equivalent qualification. Candidates who have passed a minimum of five IGCSE/SGCSE/GCE/O-Level subjects, including Portuguese, may be admitted directly to year two of the programme.

6. B.Ed. (Primary)
Entrance Requirements: Candidates will be considered for admission in Level 1 of the Degree if they have a pass in the qualifications below. In addition, candidates should have a pass in Education:
(a) the Diploma in Education (Primary or Secondary or Inservice) OR
(b) the two-year Secondary Teacher’s Certificate OR
(c) the two-year Secondary Teacher’s Diploma OR
(d) the three-year Primary or Secondary Teacher’s Diploma OR
(e) a recognized equivalent qualification; In addition, the candidates’ major subjects must fit into an acceptable Level 1 programme approved by the Institute. The subjects are:
Language Arts
African Languages and Literature
English Language and Literature
Social Studies
History
Geography
Theology and Religious Studies
Science (Subjects currently not available)
Biology
Chemistry
Mathematics
Physics
a. Candidates possessing the Diploma in Education (In-Service Primary) or an equivalent Diploma of the University of Swaziland and possessing an overall credit pass may be recommended to Senate to proceed to Level 2 of the B.Ed. (Primary) Degree programme. Normally, a recommendation will be given in cases where the candidate has obtained at least 60% in each of the major subjects to be pursued in the B.Ed. programme and successfully completed the In-Service Diploma in not more than three years of study.
b. If a transfer to B.Ed. Primary level II is not taken up within two years of its recommendation, the candidate may be considered for admission into Level 1 of the degree programme.

7. B.Ed. (Secondary)
Entrance Requirements:
7.1 A. Holders of Teachers Certificates and Diplomas
Candidates will be considered for admission to Level 1 of the degree if they have a pass in the qualifications below. In addition, candidates should have a pass in Education:
(i) the Diploma in Education (Secondary or In-Service) OR
(ii) the two-year Secondary Teacher’s Certificate (STC) OR
(iii) the two-year Secondary Teacher’s Diploma (STD) OR
(iv) the three-year Secondary Teacher’s Diploma (STD) OR
(v) a recognized equivalent qualification;
In addition to the above, candidates who wish to pursue the B.Ed. Secondary (Commerce or Science) must have obtained a credit pass in their O-Level (or IGCSE) Mathematics.
7.2 The major subjects must fit into an acceptable Level 1 programme approved by the Institute of Distance Education. The subjects are:
Accounting
Commerce
Economics
Business Studies
Religious Education
African Languages
English
History
French
Geography, Environmental Science and Planning (Currently not available)
and the Science subjects (which are currently not available)
Biology
Chemistry
Mathematics
Physics

7.3 Candidates possessing the Diploma in Education (In-Service) or the three-year Secondary Teacher’s Diploma and possessing an overall credit pass may be recommended to Senate to proceed to Level 2 of the B.Ed (Secondary) Degree Programme. Normally, a recommendation will be given in cases where the candidate has:
(a) obtained at least 60 percent in the major Subjects to be pursued in the B.Ed programme; and
(b) successfully completed the In-Service Diploma in not more than three (3) years of study.
7.4 If a transfer to B.Ed (Secondary) Level 2 is not taken up within two years of its recommendation, the candidate may be considered for admission to Level 1 of the degree programme.
7.5 B. Direct entry through GCE O’ Level (Currently not considered)
Candidates with General Certificate of Education (GCE) O’ Level & Cambridge Oversees School Certificate (COSC) qualifications shall be considered for direct admission into the Bachelor of Education (Secondary/Science) if they have one of the following:
(a) Bachelor of Education (Adult Education)
Bachelor of Education (Primary)
Bachelor of Education (Secondary)
(i) English Language and Mathematics and
(ii) EITHER
two of the following:
Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Physics, Science (Chemistry/ Physics)
OR
Combined Science and Additional Combined Science
(iii) Any other subject
OR
(b) Cambridge Overseas School Certificate (COSC) in the 1st or 2nd division with a minimum of five (5) credits (a C grade or better) which must include the subjects listed in (a) above.
C. lnternational General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) Admissions
The minimum requirement for entrance to the Bachelor of Education degree programme for holders of IGCSE shall be: A minimum of six passes in the IGCSE, which must include a C grade or better in
(i) English Language and Mathematics
(ii) EITHER Two of the following:
Biology Chemistry
Geography Physics
Physical Science
OR Co-ordinated Sciences
(iii) Any other subject.

8. B.Ed. (Adult Education)

Duration: 5 years
Entrance Requirements: A pass in Diploma in Adult Education, plus two years post-Diploma experience in work related to Adult Education. Or a credit in the Diploma in Adult Education. Or a degree in other fields accepted by the University with at least two years experience and must be currently engaged in Adult Education practice.
NB: Holders of the Diploma in Adult education with an overall average of 60% may enter the Degree programme in year 2 on the recommendation of the IDE Board to Senate.

9. Post Graduate Certificate in Education
Entrance Requirements:
A recognized university degree with an overall C grade or better, in which one or more teaching subjects have been studied. The applicant must have obtained in overall C grade or better in each of the teaching subject(s).
