The Malawi Polytechnic, a Constituent College of the University of Malawi, is inviting applications for the following Postgraduate Programmes which will commence in 2016;

1. DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (PHD) AND MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY (MPHIL)

A. Faculty of Applied Science

  • PhD and MPhil Engineering (Sustainable Engineering Management)

yCandidates for PhD programmes must have a relevant Masters or MPhil degree from recognized institutions while for MPhil the candidate must have an Honours degree in the First or Upper Second Division or a Bachelors degree with at least a Credit or a strong pass with at least 2 years experience in a relevant discipline. Candidates with Bachelors Degree will be required to accumulate 60 credits of taught modules relevant to the selected MPhil research area. The PhD and MPhil programmes are of 3 and 2.5 years duration respectively.

Fees and Expenses

US$5,500 (Paid in MK Equivalent) for the whole programme will carter for tuition, supervision and examination costs. Research expenses will vary from candidate to candidate based on the nature of research, however indicative figures of US$4,500 and US$3,500 for the whole programme for PhD and MPhil candidates respectively may be used for budgeting purposes.

2. MASTERS PROGRAMMES

A. Faculty of Applied Science � Programmes will start in September 2016

Core modules: Integrated Water Resources Management; Water Resources; Research Methodology and Geographical Information Systems and Remote Sensing.

Pathway Modules
      • Water Quality Management: Water Quality Monitoring and Assessment; Water Pollution; Water and Environmental Law and Catchment Management.
      • Water Service Management: Water Supply and Sanitation; Water Sector and Utility Management; Financial Management in the water sector and Managing Water Organizations.

Applicants must have a Bachelors Degree from any recognized institution of higher learning in pure, natural, applied or social sciences with either a credit or distinction Or strong pass plus at least 2 years relevant work experience. Those with social science should have two years of relevant water related work experience. And, Water Quality Management specialization candidates must have done Chemistry and Biology.
Masters of Science in Water Resources and Supply Management Course Calendar (MWRSM)

    • Master of Science in Environmental Protection and Management (MEPM)Course Modules: Environmental Policy and Implementation; Research Methodology; Geographical Information Systems and Remote Sensing; Environmental Waste Management and Treatment; Cleaner Technology; Global Contemporary Environmental Issues; Environmental Assessment and Environmental Monitoring and modeling

Applicants must have a Bachelors Degree from any recognized institution of higher learning in natural or applied sciences with either a credit or distinction Or strong pass plus at least 2 years relevant work experience.
Masters in Environmental Protection and Management Course Calendar

Applicants must have a Bachelors degree from any recognized institution of higher learning in Environmental Health, Public Health or any other related field with at least a strong pass and at least two years work experience at graduate level and in a relevant field.
Successful applicants will be required to pay a tuition fee of Malawi Kwacha equivalent of US$6,500.00 for local and SADC students and US$7,500.00 for other international students for the duration of two years. Programmes are offered on block release and non-residential basis.

B.Faculty of Education and Media Studies � Programmes will start in March 2016

    • Master of Technical and Vocational Education (MTVE)Course Modules: Contemporary Issues in Technical and Vocational Education; Integrated Foundations of Education; Organisational Development and Leadership in Technical and Vocational; Education Curriculum Development and Evaluation in Technical and Vocational Education; Pedagogy Studies; Educational Research Methods; Science and Technology Education; Entrepreneurship Education and Development; Design and Appropriate Technology; Strategic Planning and Policy Development in Technical and Vocational Education.

Applicants must have a Bachelors degree in Technical Education or its equivalent from a recognised university or institution. All applicants must have a minimum of a strong pass and at least two years teaching experience.
Successful applicants will be required to pay a tuition fee of Malawi Kwacha equivalent of US$5,500.00 for local and SADC students and US$6,000.00 for other international students for the duration of the programme. The programme is offered on non-residential basis for both full-time (2 years) and part-time (4 years) options.

C. Faculty of Engineering � Programmes will start in March 2016

Pathway Modules
      • � Facilities Management: Managing the Property Asset; Facilities Management Strategy and Procurement; Facilities Information and Operations Management; and Commercial and Financial Management.
      • � Water Management: Water Quality Management; Integrated Water Resources Management; Water Supply Systems; and Wastewater and Storm Water Systems.

Applicants applying for the Facilities pathway must have Bachelors Degree with a strong Pass plus 3 years working experience at graduate level in any of the following; Engineering, Urban and District Planning, Architecture and relevant Applied Science. While Applicants for the Water must have a Bachelors Degree with a strong Pass plus 3 years working experience at graduate level in Engineering and relevant Applied Science.
Successful applicants will be required to pay a tuition fee of US$6,500 Malawi Kwacha equivalent for the programme duration of 2 years. The Programme is offered on block release and non-residential basis.
Masters in Sustainable Engineering Management Calendar
Candidates for PhD programmes must have a relevant Masters or MPhil degree from recognized institutions while for MPhil the candidate must have an Honours degree in the First or Upper Second Division or a Bachelors degree with at least a Credit or a strong pass with at least 2 years experience in a relevant discipline. Candidates with Bachelors Degree will be required to accumulate 60 credits of taught modules relevant to the selected MPhil research area. The PhD and MPhil programmes are of 2 years duration respectively.

    • Master of Science in Infrastructure Development and Management (IDM)Course modules: Project Management, Research Methodology, Environment and Sustainable Development, and Infrastructure Asset Management; Water and Sanitation Systems, Sustainable Energy Systems, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Public Works Systems, Transportation Systems, and Land Resources Planning and Management.

Applicants to be considered under this programme should have a at least a Bachelors Degree in Applied Sciences, Engineering, Urban, District and Regional Planning, Architecture and Surveying from any recognised institution of higher learning with at least a credit or a strong pass plus 2 years relevant working experience.
Masters in Infrustructure Development and Management Calendar
Successful applicants will be required to pay a tuition fee of US$5,500 Malawi Kwacha equivalent for the programme duration of 2 years. The Programme is offered on block release and non-residential basis.

A complete Masters Programme application must include: An application form completed and CV; 2 Academic References; Certified Academic Transcript; Certified copies of original certificates; A non-refundable application fee of MK5,000 for Malawian applicants and USD20.00 for international students; and Proof of funding for the two years of study in a form of a scholarship offer or a bank certified guarantor.
PhD and MPhil applications must include: A completed postgraduate application form; Academic transcripts of all previous university courses taken including percentage scores where necessary; Certified copies of relevant certificates; An abstract of master�s research or dissertation; A concept paper relating to the proposed research topic which should not be more than 5 pages long; Sample academic writing i.e. publications, conference reports, etc which adhere to the broad conventions of academic publishing (i.e. contain an up-to-date review of relevant literature, a description of relevant research methods and an evaluation of results, etc.) and which identify the applicant as a significant contributor (maximum of 30 pages); 2 letters from academic referees at postgraduate level; and a detailed latest CV. Please note that PhD and MPhil candidates may apply for placement at any time of the academic year.
