Salima Fisp beneficiaries up 15% (Malawi)

The number of beneficiaries of the 2018/2019 Farm Inputs Subsidy Programme (Fisp) in Salima has gone up by 15 percent from 20 000 people last growing season to 23 000 this year.
In an interview on Monday, Salima district agricultural development officer Michael Cheyo confirmed the increase, saying all ground arrangements are in order pending delivery of coupons, which were expected to arrive on Tuesday.
He said the development is expected to improve crop productivity, considering that the district grows a lot of grain and legumes.
Cheyo asked farmers not to sell the coupons or inputs, saying those found doing so will be prosecuted.
“Selling of coupons is not acceptable. It is against the law,” he said.
Last year, some farmers in the district were offering coupons to vendors for sale.
Despite the upward change in beneficiary statistics some communities complained that some of their subordinates are missing from this year’s list.
For example, group village head Kalichero in Traditional Authority Maganga said some of his subjects are missing from the list.
In response, Cheyo said his office is yet to receive such complaints.
