No Planet, No Business

Tony Frost is a Conservationist-in-Residence with the ALU School of  Wild Life Conservation. In this article, he shares his thoughts on how companies need to start taking a strong stand on conservation.

—“It’s incumbent upon businesses to make sure we are taking an active role in creating opportunity for everyone…Increasingly, businesses are going to have to get involved in things where you can’t draw a straight line to the business.” — Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins
—“Mission is a big deal in innovation. You have to ask: What problem do you want to solve? How do you want to change the world?” —Ampere Computing CEO Renee James
—“We have got to reinvent ourselves every day. Our 132-year history is a source of pride, but we can’t let it become an anchor.” —Johnson & Johnson CEO Alex Gorsky.
These three quotations from the Fortune magazine CEO Forum, happening in Canada at the moment, give an insight into how some of the top people in business are thinking. This attitude is just as well because increasingly, businesses are beginning to take a stand on important, seemingly indirect issues. Climate Change is one.
Top business people who operate globally, especially those not related to the fossil fuel industry fully understand the impact that Climate Change will have on their businesses. Simply put: No Planet, No Business.
The conservation community is presented with a great opportunity to engage with businesses across all industries to help them think through the changes needed for them to continue to thrive and grow, and at the same time contribute to a healthier planet. The aim must be to lower costs while at the same time lowering environmental impact.
