2019 INTAKE
The Malawi Polytechnic, a Constituent College of the University of Malawi, Faculty of Applied Sciences is
inviting applications for the following Postgraduate Programmes which will commence in September, 2019

  1. DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (PHD)
    a) PhD Applied Sciences (Environmental Sanitation)
    b) PhD Applied Sciences (Renewable Energy)
    c) PhD Applied Sciences (Public Health Engineering)

    be required to accumulate 60 credits of taught modules relevant to the selected MPhil research area. The
    PhD and MPhil programmes are of 3 and 2.5 years duration respectively.
    Fees and Expenses
    US$10, 000 (Paid in MK Equivalent) for the whole programme of PhD will cater for
    supervision and examination costs with an Indicative figure of US $ 4,500 for research for the
    whole PhD programme, and;
    US$5,500 (Paid in MK Equivalent) for the whole programme of MPhil will cater for tuition, supervision and examination costs With indicative figure of US$3,500 for research for the
    whole MPhil programme for budgeting purposes. APPLICATION PROCEDURE FOR PhD AND MPhil;
    A completed PhD & MPhil applications MUST INCLUDE:
    A non-refundable application fee of MK10,000 for Malawian applicants and US$25.00 for
    international applicants;
    A completed postgraduate application form;
    Academic transcripts of all previous university courses taken including percentage scores
    where necessary;
    Certified copies of relevant certificates;
    An abstract of master’s research or dissertation;
    A concept paper relating to the proposed research topic which should not be more than 5
    pages long. The concept note must include the following;
    Introduction
    Problem statement
    Research objective
    Preliminary literature review

    Methodology
    references
    Sample academic writing i.e. publications, conference reports, etc which adhere to the broad
    conventions of academic publishing (i.e. contain an up-to-date review of relevant literature, a
    description of relevant research methods and an evaluation of results, etc.) and which identify
    the applicant as a significant contributor (maximum of 30 pages);
    1 letters from an academic referee at postgraduate level and 1 letter from professional referee;
    A detailed latest CV. Please note that PhD and MPhil candidates may apply for placement at any time of the
    academic year. h) Master of Science in Water Resources and Supply Management (MWRSM) – (to
    commence in September 2019)
    Core modules: Integrated Water Resources Management; Water Resources; Research
    Methodology and Geographical Information Systems and Remote Sensing. Pathway Modules
    Water Quality Management: Water Quality Monitoring and Assessment; Water Pollution;
    Water and Environmental Law and Catchment Management. Water Service Management: Water Supply and Sanitation; Water Sector and Utility
    Management; Financial Management in the water sector and Managing Water
    Organizations. Applicants must have a Bachelors Degree from any recognized institution of higher learning in
    pure, natural, applied or social sciences with Either a credit or distinction Or strong pass plus at
    least 2 years relevant work experience. Those with social science should have two years of relevant
    water related work experience. And, Water Quality Management specialization candidates must
    have done Chemistry and Biology. i) Master of Science in Environmental Protection and Management (MEPM) – (to commence
    in September 2019)
    Course Modules: Environmental Policy and Implementation; Research Methodology;
    Geographical Information Systems and Remote Sensing; Environmental Waste Management and

    Treatment; Cleaner Technology; Global Contemporary Environmental Issues; Environmental
    Assessment and Environmental Monitoring and modeling
    Applicants must have a Bachelors Degree from any recognized institution of higher learning in
    natural or applied sciences with Either a credit or distinction Or strong pass plus at least 2 years
    relevant work experience. j) Master of Science in Environmental Health (MEH) – (to commence in September, 2019)
    Course Modules: Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Environmental Health and Sustainable
    Development, Environmental Pollution Control, Food Safety and Hygiene, Health Communication
    and Behaviour Change, Health Impact Assessment, Occupational Health and Safety, Project
    Management, Research Methodology and Water and Sanitation. Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree from any recognized institution of higher learning in
    Environmental Health, Public Health or any other related field with at least a strong pass (50% and
    above) and at least two years work experience at graduate level and in a relevant field. APPLICATION PROCEDURE FOR MASTERS;
    A complete Masters Programme application MUST INCLUDE:
    A completed application form and CV;
    1letter from an Academic Referees and One letter professional referee;
    Certified Academic Transcript;
    Certified copies of original certificates by a commissioner of oath or Lawyers or
    the Central Office ( University Office);
    A non-refundable application fee of MK10, 000 for Malawian applicants and US$25.00
    for international applicants;
