Copperbelt University Call for Scholarships to Master of Philosophy Studies 2020

1. Introduction

The Copperbelt University (CBU) in collaboration with World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) is undertaking joint biological and socio-economic research projects. This research collaboration aims at generating information and building capacity towards the sustainable utilization, conservation and management of the biodiversity and natural resources in Zambia. It intends to promote multidisciplinary research at Masters and PhD levels through the School of Natural Resources and School of Graduate Studies.

Therefore, CBU and WWF are pleased to announce a call for scholarships to a specific Master of Philosophy (MPhil.) programme, attainable at the Copperbelt University in MPhil. Tropical Ecology and Biodiversity Management.

2. Programme on Offer

The scholarships are only tenable at the Copperbelt University for a Master of Philosophy (MPhil.) degree in Tropical Ecology and Biodiversity Management in any of the following four (4) sub-themes. Please choose one:

  1. MPhil. with focus on providing better understanding on habitat, management threats of keystone bird species on the Barotse Floodplain.
  2. MPhil. with focus on providing better understanding on the utilisation patterns, management of fisheries in the Barotse Floodplain and its contribution to local livelihoods.
  3. MPhil. with focus on assessing the species composition, status and habitat associations for wildlife populations of the West Lunga National Park.
  4. MPhil. with focus on knowledge review on distribution and movements of large herbivores and carnivores in the Kabompo Landscape.

3. Requirements for Admission

The advertised programmes are on a full-time basis, i.e. two (2) years of study for MPhil.

The MPhil. is completed by research. Candidates will be expected to participate in special seminars in the Graduate School to enhance research skills.

Leading to the fulfillment of the MPhil. thesis, the research should exhibit some measure of academic, ecological and socio-economic relevance. To achieve this, candidates applying for the scholarship must pursue research projects linked to one of the four (4) research sub-themes listed in Section 2.

4. Funding and Conditions of the Scholarships

The scholarships are open to qualified and eligible candidates from Zambia and the Africa region. Female candidates are especially encouraged to apply. The Scholarships will cover the following:

  1. Tuition fees; registration fees; examination fees; laboratory fees; limited research costs including field trips, and limited living expenses (stipends).
  2. Candidates awarded the scholarships are supported only for the duration of studies, i.e. 2 years for MPhil. However, this support is incumbent upon successful progress in each year. Candidates on the scholarship must endeavor to complete their studies in the stipulated timeframes as extension of funding will not be possible.

5. Method of Application

Applicants for the scholarship must first be admitted by School of Postgraduate Studies of the Copperbelt University. The application will only be complete if the following documents are submitted;

  • Personal Motivation Statement
  • Admission letter to MPhil. from CBU
  • Certified copies of academic certificates and transcripts of results.
  • Certified copies of National Registration Card or Passport
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Two letters of references from persons acquainted with candidate’s academic and professional work.
  • A 2-3 page research concept note for MPhil. research linked to the sub-themes outlined in section 2.
