The new GARH has among others, an ultra-modern 420-bed capacity, a comprehensive diagnostic and treatment block with 24-hour surgery department, delivering unit, accident and emergency unit, pharmacy, a logistic building, a 42-accommodation facility for staff, a school of Anaesthesia, a new mortuary and a new road network.
GARH within the Context of GHS
Regional Hospitals provide a secondary level of healthcare for the regions where they are located. They form an integral part of the regional health system. They are managed by Medical Directors and provide general specialist care involving skills and competence not available at the District Hospitals. Some of the Regional Hospitals (like the GARH) may have complex and sophisticated equipment and facilities to handle a variety of specialised conditions. They may refer cases to the Teaching and other Specialist Hospitals.
As Regional Hospital for the Greater Accra Region, its catchment area is the whole of the Region with an estimated population of about 4,283,322 inhabitants. However, the immediate catchment area includes the following suburbs: Nima, Maamobi, Kanda, Accra New Town, Kotobabi, Osu, La, Adabraka, Achimota, Airport Residential Area and Central Accra.
