KNUST Skills for Excellence In Science Series (SEXISS); Good Clinical Practice (GCP) 2020

As part of the Skills for Excellence In Science Series (SEXISS), The Global Health and Infectious Diseases Research Group (GHID) at the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine (KCCR), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in collaboration with the African Regional Training Centre (ARTC) with support from the World Health Organization (WHO) Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR), is offering a Continuous Professional Development (CPD)-eligible workshop in “Good Clinical Practice”; GCP 2020.

GCP 2020 is an intensive workshop which covers basic concepts to equip participants with practical and contextual knowledge needed towards implementing GCP-compliant medical research involving humans. The training is designed to be immersive, combining rich interactive online and in-person lectures and case studies with practical sessions delivered by carefully selected faculty.

The outline for Workshop is as follows:

DAY 1

  • Introduction to Clinical Research
  • Introduction to Good Clinical Practice
  • Research ethics

DAY 1

  • Informed Consent
  • Cultural sensitivity and community engagement
  • Participant safety and adverse events

DAY 1

  • FDA, GCP audits and inspection
  • Ethics in Implementation Research
  • Ethics in clinical research during infectious disease epidemics

Note the following covering GCP 2020:

  • Dates for on-site workshop: Monday – Wednesday, October 26 – 28, 2020; 9:00am – 5:00pm each day
  • Venue: IDL Conference Centre, near KNUST poolside
  • Application opens: Friday, August 14, 2020 and closes: Tuesday, September 01, 2020
  • Independent reviewers will shortlist 30 applicants to participate in the workshop
  • Applicants will be shortlisted based on the strength of their application and ability to demonstrate that the skills learned will need to be applied immediately or in the very near future as part of their work/education.
  • All shortlisted applicants will be required to take an online course between September 04 – 30, 2020 (4 hours/week, total of 20 hours required). Completing the online course is a prerequisite for participating in the workshop.
  • Scholarship: will cover tuition, workshop materials, feeding, subsidy for travel costs and accommodation

The following are the eligibility criteria for applying to participate in GCP 2020:

  • be working or studying in an institution within Africa
  • have at least a degree in the biomedical sciences e.g. pharmacy, biological sciences, medicine, nursing, medical laboratory technology or related discipline, or must be involved in work that requires the discipline
  • be available to participate in GCP 2020 in its entirety
  • demonstrate that the skills learned will need to be applied immediately or in the very near future as part of their work/education.
