On Monday, October 5, 2020, the opening ceremony for a series of training sessions for faculty on online teaching and learning tools was held. The programme, which is under the auspices of the Office of Pro Vice-Chancellor (ASA), in collaboration with the Centre for Teaching and Learning Innovation (CTLI) and the University of Ghana Computing Systems (UGCS), seeks to enhance the capacity of faculty to effectively use online teaching and learning tools.

The Pro-VC (ASA), Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, who chaired the opening ceremony, reiterated the need to sharpen the capacity of faculty to fully utilise the online teaching and learning tools in response to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a welcome remark, the Director of the Centre for Teaching and Learning Innovation (CTLI), Prof. Samuel Agyei-Mensah, expressed the delight of CTLI in collaborating with the Office of Pro Vice-Chancellor and UGCS to conduct the online training programme for faculty. Prof. Agyei-Mensah indicated that the CTLI is a newly established centre in the University funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and that it seeks to promote excellence and innovation in teaching at the University, with the goal of transforming student learning experiences by providing professional development opportunities for faculty and graduate/teaching assistants.

Prof. Agyei-Mensah noted that the take-off of the Centre was timely, as the University strives to enhance the teaching competencies of its faculty. He assured faculty that the Centre’s doors are open to all irrespective of disciplinary background and encouraged faculty members to make good use of the resources available at the Centre and its programmes.

It is anticipated that participants would acquire practical skills and knowledge of best practices based on sound educational theory that would be useful across academic disciplines and a variety of contexts.

The training sessions will be run over a three-week period for beginners, intermediate and advanced level participants.
