AGRICULTURE ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES

A. UNDERGRADUATE SUB-DEGREE PROGRAMMES – 3 YEARS

DIPLOMA IN ANIMAL HEALTH AND PRODUCTION (Phased out)

Requirements: Minimum of (COSC) or equivalent with a pass with Credit in Mathematics, passes in English Language, Biology, Chemistry, or Physical Sciences, Combined Science, Additional Combined Science or Agricultural Sciences: Pass with credit in Certificate in Agriculture or equivalent, A pass with at least Second Division in Secondary Teachers Certificate with Agriculture or any other qualification recognized by NUL.

Career Opportunities: Managers of animal production farms and enterprises (individual, group or co-operatives), Technical advisers to production enterprises Sales representatives of animal products, Extension Officers in Veterinary and Animal Production Divisions/Departments, Self Employment.

B. UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAMMES – 4 YEARS

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN AGRICULTURE (GENERAL):WITH OPTIONS IN:

  • Agricultural Economics
  • Agricultural Extension
  • Animal Science
  • Crop Science
  • Soil Science
  • Home Economics

Requirements: COSC or equivalent in the 1st or 2nd class, a minimum aggregate of 34 in the best six passed subjects and a minimum of at least 4 credits including Mathematics and an approved Science Subject (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Physical Science, combinations of combined and additional Combined Science, Agricultural Sciences Geography, Home Economics/Domestic Science), A minimum of a D (7) in English Language, or any other qualification that may be approved by the Senate of the National University of Lesotho.

Career Opportunities: Employees of Public/Government and Private Organizations as Agriculturalists or Environmental Scientists, Food Security Officers, Forestry Officers, Senior Officers (National Agriculture Research), Project Management Officers, Agricultural Economists, Food System Economists, Monitoring and support Officers, Consultants, Lecturers at institutions of Higher Learning.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN AGRICULTURE: SOIL SCIENCE – 4 YEAR

Career Opportunities: Employees of Public/Government and Private Organizations as Agriculturalists or Environmental Scientists: – remedial of contaminated soils, diagnose plant growth Problems, irrigation, waste management, soil testing, consultancy On soil/land management, soil fertility improvement and soil and water conservation, Lecturer at Higher Institutions of Learning.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN HOME ECONOMICS [DIRECT] – 4 YEARS

Requirements: COSC or equivalent in the 1st or 2nd class, a Minimum aggregate of 34 in the best six passed subjects and a Minimum of a lest four (4) credits including Mathematics and an Approved Science subject (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Physical Science, Combinations of Combined and Additional Combined Science, Agricultural Science, Geography, Home Economics/Domestic Science), in COSC or equivalent, plus a minimum of a D (7) in English Language or any other qualification approved by Senate of the National University of Lesotho.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN HOME ECONOMICS [INDIRECT] – 3 YEARS

Requirements: Candidates must possess at least one of the following Categories of qualifications:

  • Pass (50%) in Biology or Chemistry, at least (40%) in the remaining science courses, Overall Weighted Mean of at least 50% and 50% in agricultural core courses.
  • Pass (50%) in Biology or Chemistry, at least 40% in the remaining science courses, Overall Weighted Mean of At least 50% in the common 1st year of Bachelor of Science Programme.
  • Pass with Credit in Diploma in Home Economics and other related fields of study obtained from an institution recognized by Senate of the National University of Lesotho.

Any other qualification that may be approved by Senate of the National University of Lesotho.

Irrespective of the category of qualification possessed, all candidates must meet the English Language Requirement of (COSC grade of 7(D) or better).Career Opportunities: Employees of Public/Government and Private organizations as: Secondary/High School Teachers, College/University Lecturers, Nutritionists, Consumer Specialists, Textile Specialists, Researchers, Community Development Officers, Outreach Officers, Commercial Food Service Operators, Food and Nutrition Consultants, Fashion Designers, Day Care Centre Specialists, Nursery School Specialists, Utility Company Demonstrators, Dieticians and Entrepreneurs.

C. MASTERS DEGREES: – 2 YEARS (under review)

  • Agricultural Economics

Requirements: B.Sc. Agriculture or equivalent, with a minimum of Second Class, Second Division or C Grade and an average of 70% in all subjects matter courses.

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN ANIMAL SCIENCE: 2 YEARS (under review)

Requirements: The prospective candidate must normally hold at least a Second Class Honours degree from a University or Institution recognized by the National University of Lesotho. In addition, the candidate must have achieved a means equivalent to at least Second Class – Second Division (60%) in the courses relevant to the area in which the candidate intends to execute his/her M.Sc. degree research project.

Programme Structure: Execution of the Master’s programme may be either by Coursework with Thesis (Mode I) or by heavy Coursework component plus mini-project (Mode II). The programme may be executed on full-time (Minimum duration 24 and maximum 30 calendar months), or part-time basis (minimum duration 30 and maximum 54 calendar months), except that the coursework component shall be on full-time basis only.

Minimum requirement for admission into Ph.D. is M.Sc degree in the relevant area or its equivalent. The duration of this degree is normally not less than 4 years.

Ph.D. IN ANIMAL SCIENCE (under review)

Requirements: Prospective candidates must hold a Master’s degree with Coursework and Thesis in the relevant area of Animal Science, of the National University of Lesotho or an equivalent Institution. Candidates who have not met the M.Sc. coursework requirements of the Department, shall be required to take remedial courses determined by the Department
