Soomunth Balgobin and Maya Luchman Balgobin Trust Undergraduate Scholarship Scheme Academic Year 2021-2022

The late Soomunth Balgobin and Maya Luchman Balgobin vested funds in the Soomunth Balgobinand Maya Luchman Balgobin Trust to be used to support students of Universities in Mauritius.
These funds have been invested in interest bearing bonds held by the Bank of Mauritius and the MCS Mutual Aid Association. The interest generated from these investments is used to fund some needy students.

The trustees of the ‘Soomunth Balgobin and Maya Luchman Balgobin Trust’ will receive applications, for the grant of scholarships, from deserving and needy students pursuing studies at
the University of Mauritius.

For the year 2021-2022, the Trust will grant a total of THREE scholarships to students who have already secured admission on a full-time Non-Tuition Fee paying Undergraduate Degree
Programme at the University of Mauritius. The scholarship of a value of Rs 2,000 each and payable monthly as from November 2021, will aim to cover the monthly expenditure incurred by the
scholars.

The applicants will need to have
 Good Higher School Certificate and/or University results
 Demonstrate a need for financial support to pursue their studies and
 Are not benefitting from any other scholarship.

The scholarship is designed to cover the student’s expenses and its renewal will depend on:
(i) Good academic results produced by the student at the end of each academic year
(ii) Regular attendance at lectures; and
(iii) Good behaviour, failing which the Trustees may decide to terminate the scholarship .

The University of Mauritius will submit to the Trust the applications from students as a result of this advertisement. The trustees will select THREE names from the applications received.
The trustees reserve the right not to allocate any scholarship pursuant to this advertisement and no legal action can be taken against the trustees following the allocation of the scholarship. The decision of the trustees will be final and the Trust will not enter into ANY communication with applicants.
Completed application forms with all supporting documents (including a detailed CV) MUST reach the Admissions and Student Records Office, UoM by Friday 3rd December 2021 at latest.
Applications received after 3rd December 2021 at the University of Mauritius will not be considered.

Applications are invited from deserving and needy students who have obtained admission on fulltime non-tuition fee paying Undergraduate Degree Programmes at the University of Mauritius (UoM) in the Academic Year 2021-2022 and who wish to be considered for Sponsorship by the Soomunth Balgobin and Maya Luchman Balgobin Trust.

Eligibility criteria
Applicants should satisfy the following conditions:

  1. Students are citizens and residents of the Republic of Mauritius.
  2. Students are enrolled on a full-time programme, in any Faculty/Centre, at the University of Mauritius.
  3. The family monthly income of the students does not exceed Rs.20,500/
  4. Students are not beneficiaries of any other grant or scholarship. Selection Procedure
    Selection of beneficiaries of the Scholarships will be carried out by the trustees of the SBMLB
    Trust

Application

  1. Applications must be made on the prescribed form obtainable from the Admissions and Student Records Office, Professor Sir Edouard Lim Fat Engineering Tower, Ground floor,
    University of Mauritius, Réduit or from the UoM website under Assistance to Students/Scholarships on the following link: https://www.uom.ac.mu/index.php/study-atuom/prospective-students/assistance-to-students-scholarships. Applicants should submit copies of the following supporting documents along with their application:
    I. One recent passport-size photograph;
    II. A detailed CV
    III. Copies of Birth Certificate and National Identity Card;
    IV. Copies of National Identity Card of Responsible Party/ies;
    V. Evidence of monthly income of parents, marital status of parents and proof of need for financial
    assistance;
    VI. A testimonial from the Faculty/Centre concerned certifying that the applicant is a registered
    student of the UoM;
    VII. Copies of their HSC or GCE (A) level certificates;
    VIII. The beneficiaries must subscribe to an agreement to follow and complete the programme of study and to inform The Soomunth Balgobin and Maya Luchman Balgobin Trust if they obtain another scholarship/grant or decide to withdraw from the programme of study and
    IX. Renewal of the Scholarship for the 2nd and subsequent years will depend on good academic results for the previous academic year, regular attendance and good behaviour as certified by UoM. A relevant report will be sought from UoM on the last two aspects.
  2. Completed Application Forms with all supporting documents MUST reach the Admissions and
    Student Records Office, UoM by Friday 3rd December 2021 at latest.
  3. Note
    (i) Applications received after the closing date and/or not supported by the relevant documents
    will not be considered.
    (ii) Only successful candidates will be notified of the outcome of their application.
    (iii) You will be required to sign a ‘Consent Form’ upon acceptance of the Scholarship.
