African Bible College University School Prospectus

Welcome to African Bible University! We are a unique and innovative institution
within the country of Uganda. Our goal is much more than simply giving students
an excellent education, although we certainly do that. We desire that in every
way our students will be trained and equipped to be leaders, transformers of
society, salt and light in the community. We believe that workers in the kingdom
of God is not meant to bring themselves glory but to glorify God through their
obedience to His Word and the proclamation of His Gospel.
Unlike most other universities in Uganda, it takes a full four years of study
to earn a Bachelor’s degree at African Bible University. Our expanded
curriculum, while unique among chartered universities in Uganda, is a proven
method of preparing students to be adaptable and well-balanced by approaching
education holistically. During these four years, students are exposed to a great
variety and depth of learning that will enable them to be versatile in their thinking
and vision. The world is ever-changing, and our graduates are thoroughly capable
of putting their skill set to use whatever challenges may inevitably arise. Of
course, every student at African Bible University takes a significant number of
Bible and Theology courses. This training will prepare them for many different
kinds of Christian ministry. However, students also take a number of other
courses such as English, history, ethics, fundamental mathematics, Office
Applications and Entrepreneurship. In addition to our Bachelors of Biblical
Studies, we have Bachelors of Business Administration, Education, and
Communication. Each of these allows for students to receive both technical as
well as hands-on training in their discipline.
The community aspect of our life at African Bible University also plays a
vital role in the training of our students. Almost all faculty and students reside
on our campus in Lubowa, just outside Kampala, and they know the students by
name. We are a different kind of institution where students are treated like
brothers and sisters in Christ.
Our prayer is that Christ will bring us the right students at the right time so
that they may be fully equipped for service to Him and His Kingdom.

  5. African Bible University’s Purpose
1.1. ABU’s Vision, Philosophy, Mission, and Objectives
    1.1.1. Vision
The vision of African Bible University is to produce servant-leaders for Christ
who will contribute positively to the communities of family, church, state and
society by the formation and promotion of an environment in which humanity
realizes its fullest potential in relation to the purposes of its Creator.
    1.1.2. Philosophy
The philosophy of African Bible University finds its foundation in the selfrevelation of the One True God in creation, in the Scriptures of the Old and
New Testaments, and in the incarnation of Jesus Christ the Son of God. African
Bible University is committed to the historic Christian faith as first expressed by
the apostles of Christ and subsequently rediscovered and formulated by the
protestant reformers. African Bible University understands that the purpose of
the Redeemer of this fallen world is to restore all things to their original
perfections. This restoration can be moved forward in significant ways despite
the current adverse circumstances of this world. Because God is the Creator
and Lord over all things, education, in all aspects of truth, can provide a
significant framework for progress in this world’s restoration. But the final
restoration can occur only at the point in time at which the Redeemer manifests
himself in the fullness of His glory and power.
    1.1.3. Mission
The mission of African Bible University is to create a community of scholars,
professors and learners who will work in harmony with the goal of mutual
stimulation in pursuit of the truth as it relates to man’s creation and redemption.
This mission shall be to encourage and assist students in exploring the truth as it
is found in God’s Creation, his Providence and his inspired Scriptures. Student
at African Bible University will be particularly encouraged to search the depths
of the Scriptures as the inspired Word of God, the only infallible rule of faith and
practice. At the same time, the mission shall be to prepare students for practical

service in the world of today in areas such as business, education, community
service, and media. Having encouraged and assisted one another in this pursuit,
it shall be the mission of African Bible University to communicate by word and
deed the truths it has discovered with a view to the redemption of peoples from
    all nations of the world.
    1.1.4. Objectives
The objectives of the University shall therefore be:
to foster an increasing awareness among itself as a community that
    all truth is God’s truth;
to develop a holistic view of life among its own community which
    may be transmitted to the surrounding environment;
to provide a framework for interaction with God’s truth which shall
stimulate revival, reformation and transformation among
individuals, families, churches, businesses, governments, and the
    whole of society;
to offer an educational programme that shall equip its students to
serve effectively in their chosen vocation; and where desirable and
necessary, to create for themselves a vocational opportunity by
which they can adequately provide the necessities of life for
themselves and their families while also contributing significantly to
the positive development of their society.
    1.2. Statement of Faith
    1.2.1. The Bible
The Bible is the verbally inspired Word of God, the written record of His
supernatural revelation of Himself to man, absolute in its authority, complete in
its revelation, final in its content, and without error.
African Bible University, “Teaching the Treasures of God’s Truth”
    ABU Catalogue, 2021
    1.2.2. The Godhead
God is One God, who reveals Himself in three Persons: Father, Son, and Holy
    Spirit.
  6. The Father: who is Spirit, infinite, eternal and unchangeable in all His
    attributes.
  7. The Son, Jesus Christ: His deity, virgin birth, sinless life, substitutionary
atoning death, bodily resurrection, personal exaltation at God’s right hand
    and personal return.
  8. The Holy Spirit: who is a Divine Person, equal with the father and the Son
    and of the same nature.
    1.2.3. The Estate of Man
The fall and lost estate of man, whose total depravity alienates him from God,
    makes necessary his salvation.
  9. Man’s salvation is only by grace, a free gift of God, through faith in the
Lord Jesus Christ, who died for our sins according to the Scriptures. Those
who thus are moved by the Spirit of God to receive Christ by faith have
their sins forgiven and their hearts cleansed; and having been born of the
Spirit they become children of God and are made new Creatures in Christ.
  10. Saved, man is assured of eternal blessedness. Lost, man is assured of
    everlasting punishment in hell.
    1.2.4. The Church
The church is the bride of Christ. In its universal aspect, it comprises the whole
body of those who have been born of the Spirit, and in its local expression it is
established for worship, mutual edification, and witness.
    1.2.5. The Christian Lif e
If man is to fellowship with his Holy God, his Christian life must be holy. God in
his grace has made this life available to man:

  11. He has given him the Scriptures that he might see sin.
  12. He has given him the Holy Spirit to convict of sin.
  13. He has given His son to pay the penalty of sin.
  14. He has given him access to His throne of grace that he might confess his
sin and be forgiven and cleansed.
Christian living includes Christian service, the winning of souls and the preaching
and teaching of the gospel in the uttermost parts of the earth in order to fulfil
    Christ’s great commission.
  15. In carrying on this work there is needed the supernatural power of the Holy
    Spirit.
  16. In all this service prayer is to have the central place

1.2.6. The Christian Hope
Jesus Christ will come again to earth the second time. We are to look for His soon
coming, yea, to long for it, for he will come personally, bodily and visibly and
with power and glory.
1.3. A Brief History of African Bible University
African Bible Colleges, Inc. has a long history in Africa. The original vision for
the colleges began in the hearts and minds of Dr. and Mrs. John W. Chinchen.
After spending seven years training pastors in the interior of Liberia, the
Chinchens realized the great need for University-level educational institutions
committed to the Bible as God’s infallible Word that would respond to the need
of the large number of secondary school graduates in Africa. In 1978 the vision
became reality when the first of these universities opened in Liberia, West Africa.
A second University opened in 1991 in the Southeast African country of Malawi.
In due time both these universities were recognized by the governments of their
respective countries as accredited, degree-granting institutions.

College campus in Malawi kept asking for the administration to begin a third
University in Uganda. An exploratory trip was made in 1996, and encouragement
was received from individuals, churches and government officials. Seven trips
were made over a six-year period, and in 2002 twenty acres were finally acquired
in Lubowa, just ten kilometres south of the capital city of Kampala. Construction
began the same year, following a master campus design including plans for 25
buildings. In 2004 an additional ten acres adjoining the original property was
acquired. The University opened in September 2005 with a pioneer class of
twenty students.
With its strategic location in the East African country of Uganda, African Bible
University offers quality education from a Christian perspective to the
surrounding countries of Sudan, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda,
Burundi, Tanzania and Kenya. It is our prayer that over the yearsto come, many
servant-leaders for Africa will go forth with a vision of expanding Christ’s
kingdom throughout the continent.

  1. Admissions and Finances
    2.1. Entrance Requirements
The standards of Christian commitment and scholarship maintained by African
Bible University require a policy of selective admission. All applications are
reviewed and evaluated in two areas:
    2.1.1. Character
Students must give evidence through their written testimony of having had a
genuine conversion experience involving repentance from sin and faith in Christ
alone for salvation. Applicants should have a sincere desire to study the Word
of God, to grow in the knowledge of Jesus Christ, and to prepare themselves to
serve Him in the fullest possible way. Letters of recommendation are also
required from the applicant’s pastor or other person of standing in the community
who can evaluate the applicant’s character and testify to the vitality of the

applicant’s Christian experience, moral character, and personal integrity.
    2.1.2. Academic Achievement
The applicant’s past scholastic records and performance will be evaluated, along
    with ABU Entrance Examination scores.
2.2. Minimum Academic Requirements for Admission
All Ugandan applicants for admission to African Bible University must have
successfully completed Senior 4, and have at least one of the following:
2.2.1. Five passes at ‘O’ Level and two principle passes at ‘A’ Level
2.2.2. A relevant diploma from a recognised institution
2.2.3. A Higher Education Certificate from a recognised institution
2.2.4. Be at least 22 years of age and have a 50% pass mark in the mature
entry examination, from a centre authorised by NCHE.
2.2.5. International students should equate their qualifications such that
they meet one of the requirements above.
    2.3. Admissions Procedures
Formal application to African Bible University consists of the following:
2.3.1. Submission of a completed application form, which may be
obtained from the office of the Registrar or from the University’s
website: www.abu.ac.ug. The completed application form should
include photocopies of all documents establishing qualifications and
    transcripts.

African Bible University, “Teaching the Treasures of God’s Truth” ABU Catalogue, 2021 2.3.2. Students who have submitted a satisfactory application and who have met the minimum academic requirements will be invited to sit for the African Bible University Entrance Examinations. 2.3.3. Prospective students who successfully complete the African Bible University Entrance Examinations may be called to the University for a Personal Oral Interview with the Academic Registrar or another designated member of the faculty or administration before final selection is made. At this time all original documents must be produced and photocopies verified. 2.3.4. If the interview is satisfactory, the applicant will be asked to provide a health certificate from a qualified physician. In addition, the applicant’s referees will be contacted to provide personal recommendations. 2.3.5. After the candidate has been interviewed, and all necessary records, transcripts and references have been received, a decision will be made regarding the applicant. Notification of acceptance or rejection will then be communicated to the applicant. African Bible University, “Teaching the Treasures of God’s Truth” ABU Catalogue, 2021 2.4. ABU Fees It is the desire of African Bible University that every qualified student who wishes to attend the University be able to do so. In order to encourage this desire, the University makes every effort to keep the cost of tuition, accommodation and meals to a minimum. Tuition and fees, including books and health insurance, are set annually. Current rates may be obtained by contacting the Registrar’s office. The fees paid by the student do not cover the entire cost of training the student. Therefore, African Bible University is dependent upon gifts from Christian friends and churches to subsidize the cost of each student’s education. 2.5. Work Scholarships Each year the University grants a limited number of scholarships in the form of work-study grants. Students may apply for work scholarships as they are available. Further details may be found in the Student Handbook. 3. Academic Policies 3.1. Semester System and Credit Hours African Bible University operates on a semester system. The academic year consists of two semesters of 15 weeks each, from September to December, and end of January to May. Special elective interterm courses are offered in January and June. In order to graduate, students must have successfully completed the specified number of credit hours in their field of study (for details see the ABU Catalogue). One credit hour represents fifty minutes of class time per week for one semester. African Bible University, “Teaching the Treasures of God’s Truth” ABU Catalogue, 2021 3.2. If for any reason you wish to appeal a course grade this appeal must be raised within the first half of the semester immediately following the course in question. Beyond that time the grade is fixed and cannot be altered. A student who has a query about his or her grade should consult the relevant instructor directly. He/she is free to go together with the Student Cabinet member for Academic Affairs. If the issue has not been satisfactorily resolved by the instructor the student should bring the matter in writing to the relevant Head of Department or to the Academic Dean, who may themselves resolve the issue, or may further present the matter to the Academic Affairs Committee of the University for resolution, and if necessary for re-marking. 4. Degree Programmes 4.1. The Design of the Curriculum As the nations of Africa rise to a new level of prominence and influence within the global village formed by the nations of the world, the great need for an informed, committed and well-trained leadership becomes more and more apparent. If the full potential of the various African nations is to be realized, the drain of gifted leadership must come to an end. This change in direction can be accomplished only as Africans receive their finest training within the continent

African Bible University, “Teaching the Treasures of God’s Truth”

itself, retain an unswerving commitment to their homeland, and perceive open
doors of opportunity for service within Africa.
While many other institutions continue to offer excellent training in
preparation for service, the design of the curriculum of African Bible
University offers a unique programme for raising up servant-leaders for the
generations to come. Several factors contribute to the basic elements of this
unique curriculum design, including (1) A four-year rather than a three-year
Bachelor of Arts programme ; (2) A broad-based education; (3) A focus on
developing the ability of the student to think creatively and innovatively; (4)
A distinctly theocentric, Christocentric, and biblical perspective.
4.1.1. A four-year rather than a three-year programme
The only way in which this University can achieve its goals, both academically
and community-wise, is to require of its students a full curriculum of four years
rather than the pattern of three years followed by most universities in Uganda.
By this requirement, students can be exposed to a breadth of knowledge and
wisdom that can be combined with a concentration of learning in more specific
fields.
4.1.2. A broad-based education
Rather than concentrating efforts on a single field of learning for three years, the
design of the curriculum is to direct the student into a broader field of inquiry, so
that one discipline becomes the stimulus for research and development in other
areas of learning.
4.1.3. A focus on developing the ability of the student to
think creatively and innovatively.
African Bible University, “Teaching the Treasures of God’s Truth”
ABU Catalogue, 2021
If the design of the curriculum is to train students to think laterally and
creatively across the various disciplines of learning, they must experience both
the breadth and depth of various areas of knowledge. As a servant-leader, the
student must cultivate an ability to solve problems of a social and economic
nature with innovative ideas, to create new avenues of advancement in the
realms of culture and education; in short, to think “outside the box.” This kind
of educational development must involve cross-cultural stimulation,
intranational and international interchange, knowledge of the past as well as the
times in which we live, and the development of an intuitive awareness of future
prospects for the nation as well as the continent.
4.1.4. A distinctly theocentric, Christocentric and biblical
perspective.
“Every thought captive to Christ” serves as the theme of the educational design
of African Bible University. If God the Creator of all things in heaven and earth
is One God in three persons, and the historical person of Jesusis His eternal Son,
the only Redeemer of a fallen world, and if the true revelation of God to man has
been embodied in the written records of the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New
Testaments, then these truths must serve as the foundation and core of our
educational curriculum. If the one Creator and Redeemer of thisfallen world has
as his goal the “restoration of all things,” then all efforts directed toward
transformation of individuals and societies must correspond to His ultimate
purpose and goal. For thisreason, the design of this curriculum must be distinctly
theocentric, Christocentric, and centred on the revelation of God in the Holy
Scriptures.
In accord with this overall design, African Bible University offers four degrees
on the Bachelor level. In all of these programmes, the goal is to raise up Christian
servant-leaders for Africa who will seek to serve Christ and their community
rather than to serve only themselves.
The subsequent pages describe the prescribed course of study for these

programmes in terms of the courses taught each year. All degree programmes
have the option of including additional electives. It is anticipated that in the near
future additional programmes will be added, such as counselling and computing.
As the individual student analyses the content of these courses, he/she
should consider carefully the realm of service to Christ and the community that
he would anticipate fulfilling.
Students should register for their chosen degree programme by the end of
their first semester. Participation in the Communications programme is limited,
and students must make special application to enter that particular course of
study. Students wishing to take the Bachelor of Business Administration must
maintain a certain academic standard determined by the Academic Affairs
Committee of the University. Details of the various programmes are described
in the following pages.
4.2. Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies (BABS)
The Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies, (abbreviated as BABS) is run by the
Department of Biblical and Theological Studies. Unlike most other universities
in Uganda, it takes four years (8 semesters) of study to earn a bachelor’s degree
at African Bible University (abbreviated as ABU). However, during these four
years, students are exposed to a great variety and depth of learning that will
enable them to be versatile in their thinking and vision. Every student takes a
significant number of Bible and Theology courses. This training will prepare
them for many kinds of Christian ministry. This is why students will also take a
number of other courses such as English, history, ethics, fundamental
mathematics, computing, and counseling, etc. Over the eight semesters, students
under this programme will study a variety of cross-cutting courses (22 course
units over eight semesters), Bible, Theology and Ministry courses (90 course

units over eight semesters), and a minimum of 14 elective course units. Students
are permitted to take approved courses from other programmes, this option
allows students to build employability into this Bible programme.
The following is the course structure of the BABS Programme. The course units
provided below constitute the requirements for the award of the Bachelor of
Arts in Biblical Studies (BABS) of African Bible University.
A candidate for this award must complete a minimum of 126 credit units, which
