Faculty of AgricultureThe aim of the faculty is; To develop well trained human resources to meet the growing needs of the various sectors of agriculture and allied industries in Botswana. To co-operate with other Departments in the Faculty of Agriculture and outside the Faculty in training and producing high quality human resources in agriculture and related fields. To combine theory and practices in order to inculcate critical thinking in all agricultural courses. The faculty is made of three departments being: Department of Agricultural and Bio Systems Engineering This department has a total of 29 staff members, 21 of which are academic staff ranging from instructor to professor The department offers mainly two undergraduate programmes right now being Bsc in soil and water conservation Engineering and Bsc in Agricultural Mechanization There are 3 streams in Master of Science in Agricultural Engineering (mechanization, Land Use Planning and Soil and water Engineering) The academic staff members are involved in research covering some of the following themes Renewable energy applications in agricultural production systems Farm safety and machinery management systems Irrigation and Drainage systems for agricultural production Decision support systems and modelling for agriculture, environment, and natural resources Department of Crop Sciences and Soils This department has a total of 41 staff members, 24 of which are academic staff ranging from instructor to professor The department offers mainly four undergraduate programmes right now being Bsc in Agriculture, Bsc in Crop Science, and Higher Diploma in Agriculture There are 4 streams in Master of Science in Crop Science (Agronomy, Crop Protection, Horticulture and Soil Science) The academic staff members are involved in research covering some of the following themes Food Security and Safety Climate Change and Environment Biotechnology Water Security Department of Food Science and Technology This department has a total of 12 staff members, 7 of which are academic staff ranging from lecturer to Professor The department offers mainly one undergraduate programme right now being Bsc in Food Science and Technology The department has developed graduate programmes to offer Master of Science in Food Science and Technology as well as PhD in Food Science. Faculty of Animal and Veterinary Sciences (FAVS)Mandate The mandate of the Faculty of Animal and Veterinary Sciences is to provide education and skills training in the science and practice of animal agriculture and animal health to support the sustainable development of the livestock sector in Botswana and the region. This mandate will be achieved through the offering of demand-driven curriculum, focussed collaborative research by both staff and graduate students and engagement of strategic stakeholders through service delivery. Through this mandate, FAVS aspires to be a center of excellence in animal agriculture, producing competent and market-ready graduates to serve in the livestock sector and its value chain. Structure of the Faculty The Faculty of Animal and Veterinary Sciences (FAVS) is planned to comprise of three academic departments and one institute, namely: a) Department of Animal Science and Production b) Department of Veterinary Sciences c) Meat Industry Training Institute Programme Offerings The Faculty offers academic programmes at Certificate, Diploma, Bachelors, Masters and PhD levels, as well as short courses demanded by the livestock industry. The short courses are of up to one-week duration and are offered at dedicated facilities at the Centre of In-Service and Continuing Education (CICE) at the main campus and at the Meat Industry Training Institute at the Lobatse campus. All programmes and short courses offered are approved and accredited by the Botswana Qualifications Authority (BQA). The BQA also registers and accredits academic staff who teach in the University. Academic programmes are subject to periodic review every five years by external experts. The Faculty endeavors to impart practical and business skills to learners to make them market ready upon graduation and be able to be self-employed and create jobs for others. Several new programmes at diploma and bachelors degree level have been developed and are at various levels of approval by university structures and the regulatory authority (BQA). Existing programmes are also under review to comply with requirements of BQA. Botswana being a livestock country, there is a need to train veterinarians locally, as such, FAVS envisages to introduce a Veterinary Medicine degree in the foreseeable future. Consultations with the government and other stakeholders has already started on the introduction of a veterinary medical degree programme at BUAN. The need for this program has been identified as a priority by the Human Resource Development Council (HRDC) Agriculture Sector Human Resources Development (HRD) Plan of 2015. Academic and Support Staff. The teaching staff of the faculty are highly qualified academically and have been trained at PhD level at universities in Africa, Australasia, Europe and North America. Their qualifications have been duly evaluated by BQA. Support staff such as technicians are highly qualified and competent to support teaching and research in the faculty. All staff regularly attend relevant short courses. The Faculty encourages staff to publish their research findings in peer-reviewed journals as well as attending local and international workshops in order to keep them abreast with new trends in their various academic disciplines. The Faculty has a total 28 academic staff, 17 with PhDs, 8 with Masters and 3 with bachelors degrees, respectively. Teaching and Research Facilities The Faculty has adequate teaching space that is shared with other faculties of the University. Efforts are being made to improve and increase research space in the form of laboratories, livestock housing and handling facilities. The engagement of stakeholders is crucial in order to for them to provide their own facilities for teaching and collaborative research. The acquisition and maintenance of modern laboratory equipment for teaching and research is of high priority. Research Projects Staff and graduate student research covers a wide area of disciplines, including livestock genetics, animal nutrition, animal health and reproduction. Some of the research projects were funded by the University and others by international organizations. Academic have international research collaborations as well as serving as external examiners and co-supervision of graduate students in other universities.
Faculty of Agri-Business, Education and ExtensionThe aim of this programme is to prepare graduates who are able to supply continuously updated science-based information that farmers and people in agriculture-related industries require to increase food production, and to increase quality of life in our rural set-up. At the end of this programme the graduates should be able: To serve as trainers in various rural training and agricultural vocational centers in the country. To plan, implement, evaluate and monitor various agricultural development projects in the country. To provide leadership in the process of participatory technology development and dissemination. To mobilise people for implementing agricultural development policies. To participate in formation of relevant farmers’ groups. To develop positive change in knowledge level, skills, attitudes and aspirations of people towards improving their quality of life. To promote awareness of farmers on issues relating to agricultural production and development. To organize and conduct extension meetings. To take up farming as a business. To serve as a link between farmers and government. To produce competent agricultural education teachers for senior secondary schools. To co-operate with other Departments in the Faculty of Agriculture and outside the faculty in training and producing high quality Agriculture teachers. To combine theory and practice in all agricultural and education courses. Analyze agricultural policy problems in relation to production and marketing. Advise farmers on farm business management. Conduct market research in the agricultural industry.
Faculty of Natural ResourcesObjectives of FNR: To apportion its share from and contribute to the achievements of the objectives of BUAN as stipulated in the BUAN Act No. 12, 2015 (BUAN A), the objectives of FNR are to: undertake, promote and facilitate research and scholarly investigations in the fields of natural resources; advance and disseminate knowledge and skills through teaching, learning and practical skills training in the fields of natural resources; contribute to national and international scientific and technological development in the fields of natural resources; support and contribute to the realization of national economic and social development in the fields of natural resources; contribute to the central and social life of the community in the fields of natural resources; and advance the intellectual and human resource capacity of the nation of Botswana and international community in the fields of natural resources.
Faculty of Sciences (FoS)Teaching and Program Offerings The Faculty of Sciences (FoS), is one of the recently established faculties in Botswana University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (BUAN). The mandate of the faculty is to advance the BUAN’s mission of ‘producing market-ready graduates for the agriculture and natural resources sectors’. The Faculty will achieve this by laying a solid foundation of sciences for all the University’s science based academic programmes and developing and offering relevant science based programmes. Structurally the Faculty has three (3) departments namely Biological Sciences (BS), Biometry and Mathematics (BM) and Physical and Chemical Sciences (PCS). Currently, FoS is a supporting faculty offering courses in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Computer Skills Fundamentals to all level 100 students. The faculty also teaches higher level undergraduate science courses and graduate courses for programmes offered in other faculties. Currently FoS does not have any programmes but is developing new qualifications in the areas of biology, chemistry and mathematical sciences at undergraduate and graduate levels. Staffing To contribute to producing market ready graduates relevant to the agriculture and natural resources sectors, the Faculty has well experienced qualified academic staff (12 PhD and 11 MSc holders) some of whom use the latest methods of teaching such as e-learning. The academic staff is supported by qualified and experienced technical staff holding B.Tec, MPhil and MSc qualifications. The faculty staff complement has some international flavor with some originating from different countries and others having been trained at recognized regional and international universities. Research Staff is also engaged in research either on their own, in collaboration with others within the BUAN or others internationally. The research skills are imparted to students through engaging them and supervising of final year research projects. Some of the thematic areas where staff have conducted research are heavy metals, epidemiology, climate change, vegetation types and medicinal plants. Community Service Faculty members are also engaged in providing service to the community through different activities some of which are (i) Remedial Teaching in Senior Secondary Schools (ii) Judging at secondary School Mathematics and Sciences Fairs and (iii) Involvement in international events such as International Junior Science Olympiad.
