Chancellor College Campus and Environment

Chancellor College is situated in Zomba, the old capital city of Malawi found in South-East of the country. It is the largest campus of the University of Malawi after other campuses in the name of The Polytechnic, College of Medicine and Kamuzu College of Nursing. The area has lower temperatures than national average almost year round due to its positioning that boarders the famous Zomba mountain to its west and Lake Chilwa to the far east. The College has five faculties, namely: Science, Law, Humanities, Education, and Social Science, each with varied departments. The Mathematical Sciences Department where the Biostatistics programmes are hosted belongs to the Faculty of Science.

Library services

The College has a big lbrary building which serves as a resource centre for print and electronic academic information. It can accomodate about 3,000 seated at once. Once students have been registered with administration, they are eligible to access the services in the College library. For orientation within the Library, arrangements with the Librarian are always made made.

Accomodation

The College has one postgraduate hall of residence. Due to expansion of PG programs in various departments, the college cannot acccomodate all postgraduate students. Students are advised to check with the office of Registrar on registrar@cc.ac.mw and Dean of Students for more information on accomodation. There are some students that make arrangements to rent a house and share bills. Students are advised to consult the other postgraduate students on possibility of sharing a house.

From time to time, there are estate agents that post information on available houses for rent in some of the notice boards on campus that may be of interest. Malawi Housing Corporation (MHC) has hostels specifically built for Chancellor College students. To apply for a room, contact MHC offices in Zomba. The rooms were at a rate of not less than K15, 000 per month in 2015.

Meals

Chancellor College is a few kilometres away from town where most of the services can be found. However, there are some outlets on campus where students can buy a quick meal and these are the Sports Complex next to basket ball court, Junior Staff Common Room which is next to the Mathematical Sciences Department, and the Home Economics Department. Students should make time to familiarise themselves with these places before classes begin.

Communication

There are no ground line facilities on campus but those with cellular phones can buy top up airtime for Airtel and TNM networks from the Senior Staff Common Room.

Student Identification

Once you register as a student at Chancellor College, you will be expecetd to process an identification card with Records Office in Administration. The Maths Department Secreatry will help the class representative to have this done once students register for classes.

Transport

There is no information on available Taxis on campus but should students require transport from time to time, they are advised to make personal arrangements with the Taxi drivers in town. Students can get these drivers just outside the Zomba Bus Depot. In some cases, a taxi is packed at the main car park on campus.

Banking Services

There is NBS Bank on campus just adjacent to the Porter’s Lodge. However, some banks are situated in town a few kilometres away from the campus and these are National Bank, Standard Bank, First Merchant Bank, Opportunity Bank, FDH Bank, and Malawi Savings Bank. To open a new account with any of these banks, students are advised to contact the Assistant Registrar (Academics) for an introductory letter.

Sporting Activities

There is a small gym available on campus in the Sports Complex close to basketball court. Should you want to participate in any sporting activities whilst on campus, you may contact the Sports Director in the Sports Complex for more details.

Internet, Photocopying and related Services

The College does have a few points where you can access the above services such as in the Library. Take time to orient yourself with these places.
