Close the ‘gap’

The performances of Grades 8, 10 and 12 students in mathematics external assessments in the country can be described as below average for a long time. Many students show minimal understanding of mathematical concepts as compared to the other externally examined subjects.

The annual and bi-annual national and regional assessments also showed dismal performances in mathematics. For example, the Pacific Islands Literacy and Numeracy Assessments (PILNA) revealed that PNG students performed well below the Pacific Island students.

And, the PNG’s pilot assessment called the Curriculum Standards Monitoring Test (CSMT), conducted in 2003 – 2004 revealed the same trend.

The cascading effects of PNG students’ lack of mathematics skill mastery often result in these dismal performances. The students’ performance in mathematics regional and national assessments is concerning.

There is no quick fix. The stakeholders and the Education Department need to acknowledge the problem. And, do something about it. The question is how do we (parents, teachers, schools and govt) help our children to do improve their mathematics skills and knowledge?

Access Mathematics Exam Resources

As mentioned, the lack of mathematics mastery at early learning and primary level, compounded with teachers’ enthusiasm and lack of resources, are among the reasons students do not do well in mathematics.

In many advanced educational settings, the universities, maths teachers and professionals are at the forefront of creating the resource for students. They do not depend solely on the govt or the education department.

Mathematics teachers are the best people to do just that – create resources in subject areas and make them available in the classrooms, schools, online or offline for students to benefit.
