Faculty of Science and Technology – Undergraduate Requirements

Preamble
The Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) shall normally be a 4-year Programme for direct entrants.
 

  1. a) Direct Entry

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (BSc.)
– BSc.  General 
– BSc. Computer Science
– BSc. Information Systems
– BSc. Statistics
 
Requirements: For entry into the Bachelor of Science degree, students must have:

  • Sat for a minimum of six (6) subjects in LGCSE examinations.
  • Obtained a B grade or better in Mathematics.
  • Obtained a C grade or better in Biology or Physical Science.
  • Obtained a C grade or better in English Language.
  • Obtained a C grade or better in one other subject.
  • Obtained a D or better in any other two subjects.

 
Ranking:
Students will be ranked according to the total point score using the following criteria:

  •  Mathematics.
  • One Science subject (Biology or Physical Science).
  • Second Science subject or English Language (whichever is better).
  • Due to the high number of applicants, students will be admitted on merit.

 

  1. b) Indirect Entry

For candidates with Certificate or Diploma qualifications from other institutions of higher learning, eligibility for admission and the entry point into the program applied for will, in each case, be determined by the department concerned.
NOTE:
The Faculty of Science and Technology will consider applicants with OOSC qualification for admission, using the present admission requirements only for a period of five (5) academic years, i.e. from academic years 2014/15 until 2018/2019. For academic years 2019/2020 onwards, FOST will consider for admission into Year I, leading to Bachelors’ Degree, applicants with COSC qualification who have:-

  • sat for COSC examination or its equivalent and passed with 1st or 2nd class division
  • obtained a pass with credit in four (4) subjects including Mathematics.
  • obtained a pass with credit in any two of  the approved Science Subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Physical Sciences, a combination of combined and additional Combined Sciences).
  • Obtained a pass with credit in English Language.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN BIOTECHNOLOGY – 4 ½ YEARS
Requirements: Successful completion of BSc. Year II in Biology of NUL or its equivalent.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN CHEMICAL TECHNOLOGY – 4 ½ YEARS
Requirements: Successful completion of B.Sc. general year 1 with a minimum grade of Physics (D), Chemistry (C) and Mathematics (D).

Requirements: Successful completion of B.Sc. Year II in Physics and Mathematics of NUL and its equivalent.
Career Opportunities: Telecommunications, Electronic Device Industry, National Industrial and Private Laboratories.
 
BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES – 4 YEARS
Requirements: Successful completion of BSc Year I in Geography and Environmental Studies of NUL or its equivalent.
Career Opportunities: Environmental Manager, Water Resource Manager, Natural Resource Manager, Geographical Information Systems Manager, Environmental Impact Assessor, Land Use Planner, Forestry and Land Reclamation Manager.
 
BACHELOR OF ENGINEERING (B.ENG.) IN COMPUTER SYSTEMS AND NETWORKS – 5 YEARS
Requirements: Successful completion of B.Sc. Year II in Physics and Computer Science at NUL or its equivalent, Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering or its equivalent from other institutions recognized by NUL Senate (normally admitted at Year II).
Career Opportunities: Computer Systems Engineer, Computing, Mathematician, Science and Engineering, technical problem solver, designing, construction, implementation and maintenance of hardware and software components of modern computing systems and computer controlled equipment as well as their communication networks.
 
BACHELOR OF ENGINEERING (B. ENG. IN ELECTRONICS) – 5 YEARS
Requirements: Successful completion of B.Sc. Year II in Physics and Computer Science of NUL or its equivalent, Diploma in Electrical and/or Electronic Engineering.
Career Opportunities: Electronic Engineer, Telecommunications Companies (e.g. Vodacom, Telecom, Econet); Embedded Systems Design, Computer Engineering, Engineering Management, Instrumentation, Control Systems Design, Image Analysts & Video Techniques, Simulations, Communications Networks, Radio and TV Broadcasting, Electronics parts repair Industry.
 
Physics: Solar Energy, Material Science, Medical Imaging, Instrumentation, Laboratories (National, Industrial & Private), Meteorology, Modelling Techniques, Serves as a base for several Allied fields in Science and Engineering (e.g. Medical Physics; Electrical/Electronic/Civil/Mechanical); etc.
