OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE OF A CABINET MAKER

AFTER GOING THROUGH THE UNDERLYING TRAINING PROGRAMME THE CABINET MAKER IS QUALIFIED TO:
Perform Work Assignment
IN THE AREA OF:
Cabinet Making
THEIR TASKS INVOLVE:
Repairing, Maintenance and make Furniture
THEIR PRIMARY TASKS:

  • Plan-Draw working rods full size
  • Calculation of material Costs/Requirement
  • Selection and preparation of timber to size
  • Marking out joints-shapes and cutting out
  • Assembling work according to Rod-Squares etc.
  • Selection of the right finishing materials and methods of application
  • Good communication skills
  • Application of basic entrepreneurship skills


The tasks are performed with minimum supervision and include independent planning, execution and control.
The relevant laws, regulations and instructions are to be observed.

OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE OF A CARPENTER & JOINER

AFTER GOING THROUGH THE UNDERLYING TRAINING PROGRAMME THE CARPENTER & JOINER IS QUALIFIED TO:
Perform Work Assignment
IN THE AREA OF:
Construction, Site Practice and Maintenance
THEIR TASKS INVOLVE:
    Demonstrate knowledge of the principals involved in Building Construction
and Workshop Practice

THEIR PRIMARY TASKS:

  • Interpret basic drawings
  • Prepares work drawings and set out full size rods in workshop and site
  • Makes material cutting lists and determines quantities and costs
  • Operates efficiently hand tools and woodworking machines
  • Perform sequences of operations involved in construction
  • Demonstrate ability to carry construction and installation of joinery components
  • Show ability on workshop and site practice safety
  • Show good communication skills
  • Compile financial statements
  • Apply basic Entrepreneurship skills

TRAINING PLAN
Job Title: Cabinetmaker
Department: Woodwork

  1. Duration of Training
    Three years of training
  2. Structure of Training:
    12 Months Basic Training at VOCTIM
    12 Months Training on the Job at Industry
    12 Months Advanced Training at VOCTIM
  3. Identification of Entry Level
    Form III Certificate ( Pass Junior Certificate )
    Pass in English, Maths and Science/Technical Subjects
    Pass Entry Interview
    Medical Report
  4. Work Assessment
    Throughout the training programme the trainees practical and theoretical work will be progressively assessed.
  5. Examination
    End of 1st year:   Assessment Report
    End of 3rd year:  External Examination
  6. Industrial Attachment
    2nd year Industry Attachment
    The type and number of skills involved in, on the job training will vary from company to company. During the time of Industry Attachment should be a Logbook establish to suggest areas of activity in the Woodwork Workshops.

    To enhance competency in our training programme, competency based training has been introduced. This is a practical skill training based on industrial standard needs. Skills performance are measured according to the
