Applications are invited for Visiting Fellowships under the Malaysia Studies Programme (MSP).
Visiting Fellow – The Peninsular Northeast (6-12 months)
The Visiting Fellow will analyse salient political trends in the Northeast of Peninsular Malaysia, encompassing Terengganu, Kelantan, Kedah and Perlis. Key emphases could include the track records and policy initiatives of state government administrations, intra-party relations between UMNO, PAS, and Bersatu, or local-level political dynamics in one or more of these states.
Visiting Fellow – The Impact of Youth on Politics (2-12 months)
The Visiting Fellow will analyse the impact of the introduction of Undi-18 on electoral outcomes in Malaysia. This will include, but not be limited to pinpointing states and cities that will be affected by this, as well as implications for the traditional voter bases of the established political parties.
Visiting Fellow – Dynamics of Change in Malaysia (2-12 months)
Malaysia has undergone change of immense scope and fluidity since the pivotal May 2018 general election. The shifting landscapes of polity, society and economy raise questions about the roles, contributions and limitations of key institutions and agencies – notably, the branches of government, the media, and civil society.
Responsibilities:
Depending on the expertise of the candidate, he or she will be conducting one or two projects related to the themes listed above. In so doing, Visiting Fellows are expected to contribute to ISEAS in the following ways:
- Write for a range of research products for the Institute such as ISEAS Trends, ISEAS Perspectives, and ISEAS Commentaries.
- Monitor economic, political and/or social trends in Indonesia/Southeast Asia.
- Where relevant, contribute to ISEAS’s collective research efforts.
Requirements
- Applicants should have a PhD degree in an area of the humanities or social sciences (especially political science/government, economics, sociology, demography, or business studies). Alternatively, applicants with a Masters’ degree and commensurate experience in government, the private sector, think tanks or civil society organizations are also invited to apply.
- Successful applicants are expected to start during the 2022 calendar year.
- Fluency in English is a must. For research on Malaysia, working knowledge of Malay is a bonus.

Manager, Financial Reporting & Analysis
This role will oversee the maintenance of the general, financial and management reporting, tax compliance and fixed assets.
Job Responsibilities:
Financial operations and grant administration
- Maintain general ledger and prepare general ledger journals
- Process receipts transactions into accounting system. Perform bank reconciliation, submit cash flow projections to AGD
- Submit grant requests to funding agency
Financial and management reporting
- Prepare periodic management/financial reports and financial statements to management, AGD and other government agencies
- Prepare and submit quarterly and annual surveys to the Department of Statistics
Budget planning and resource management
- Post journals on fixed assets and depreciation, and perform asset-to-ledger reconciliation
- Audit and risk management
- Prepare audit schedule and response to auditor’s queries
Tax compliance
- Ensure compliance with statutory tax obligations by applying tax policies, and schemes, GST reporting to IRAS, and e-submission of tax-deductible donations in myTax Portal
Requirements:
- Minimum 3 years of relevant working experience
- A team player who is meticulous, open-minded. Collaborative and independent
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Powerpoint)
- Good communication and interpersonal skills

Fellow, Regional Economics Studies
This is a mid-level research position with focus on a range of economic issues in Southeast Asia. The contract would be for a duration of two years, with possibility of extension.
Job Responsibilities:
- Conduct research in consultation RES Coordinator and Director (Research)
- Undertake policy-relevant research on economic development in Southeast Asia with emphasis on countries in the Mekong region, particularly Vietnam and Thailand
- Produce policy papers, commentaries, academic papers and conduct lectures, talks and briefings
- Manage or assist in ISEAS events such as moderating and planning
- Establish and maintain professional links with relevant stakeholders
- General editorial work and other tasks and duties related to ISEAS and RES

Requirements:
- PhD in economics, political economy, development studies or business economics
- Non-PhD applicants with experience in government, the private sector, think tanks are welcome to apply
- 3-5 years of experience in a research centre, think tank, or academic institution
- Strong interdisciplinary work with good track record in research and publications
- Strong communication and writing skills in English
- Good interpersonal and networking skills
