Diploma In Special Needs Education
Curriculum

Student teachers will take common and specialisation courses simultaneously. The common courses are grouped into Foundation studies (FS) and General Studies (GS) while the specialisation courses are divided into three groups of subject areas namely: Hearing impairment (HI), Learning Difficulties (LD) and Visual Impairment (VI). Teaching Practice (TP) will be conducted after studying the common and specialisation courses. Table 1outlines the course combination and Semesterisation of the five Curriculum subject areas.

The diploma programme courses are designed to be taught in 4 semesters in two years. The programme will cover 20 courses in 4 semesters with an average of 5 courses per semester (table 1 and table 2). Each student teacher therefore will be required to complete 20 courses of which 8 will be foundation courses, 5 general courses while 7 will be specialisation courses. Table 2 below shows a matrix of the subject combination for the two year period.

Target groups and study route

There will be three groups of specialty areas where student teachers will specialise in hearing impairment, learning difficulties and visual impairment. The course has also been designed to target two groups of teachers. These two groups of teachers will take different routes of study, conventional and distance learning modes,   but in the end they will all graduate together in the second year.

Course coding

All courses are coded using five elements (see table 3). The first two elements are letters while the last three are numerals. The two letters represent abbreviations for the subject areas: FS for Foundation Studies, GS for General Studies, HI for Hearing Impairment, LD for Learning Difficulties and VI for Visual Impairment. The three numerals are serial numbers which also represents the years of study. The courses with 100 are for the first year while those with 200 are courses which are covered in the second year.
The table below shows how subjects will be taught for each semester for a period of two years.
