How many hospitals are there in Botswana?

26Botswana has a total of 26 public hospitals widely distributed across the country (Figure 2). The hospital system is structured into three levels based on the population served and the complexity of services provided. There are 16 primary hospitals representing the lowest level of hospital services (24).

3Botswana has an extensive network of health facilities (hospitals, clinics, health posts, mobile stops) in the 27 health districts. There are 3 national Referral Hospitals, 15 District Hospitals, 17 Primary Hospitals.

What are primary hospitals?

Primary healthcare denotes the first level of contact between individuals and families with the health system. The Primary Health Centre (PHC), staffed by Medical Officer and other paramedical staff serves every 30000 population in the plains and 20,000 persons in hilly, tribal and backward areas.
