Dr Chilufya said the surgical complex will be built in a bid to run with the Ministry of Health transformative agenda of improving service delivery at all health institutions countrywide.
“The surgical complex will house a dental clinic with new equipment, women’s clinic and a state-of-the-art eye centre of excellence,” he said.
He was speaking at the Livingstone Central Hospital open day in a speech read for him by Ministry of Health permanent secretary for administration Kennedy Malama.
The open day is an opportunity for members of the public to visit the health facility to understand operations and services provided at the hospital, and for them to also offer advice on how best service delivery can be improved.
Dr Chilufya said Government is building a perimeter wall to secure the new equipment and provide a safe and secure environment for patients and clients.
He said plans are underway to expand infrastructure at the school of nursing to accommodate new training programmes and increase student enrollment.
“Government has introduced theatre nursing and public health nursing diplomas at the Livingstone General Hospital nursing school,” he said.
Dr Chilufya said the hospital is also planning to introduce training in occupational therapy, prosthetics, and orthotics before the end of this year which will make Livingstone Central Hospital the only facility in the country offering the two programmes.
He said the investments require protection against vandalism and that the community must have a sense of ownership by protecting the infrastructure.
And speaking earlier, Southern Province medical director Jelita Chinyonga said the province is on course with the Ministry of Health transformation agenda in terms of service delivery.
Dr Chinyonga said health service delivery is at elimination stage and that all health centres in the province are working on getting to zero or single digit in terms of eradicating diseases.
And Livingstone Central Hospital senior medical superintendent John Kachimba commended the Ministry of Health and other cooperating partners for helping the facility in improving service delivery as evidenced by the procurement of modern hospital equipment.
