About Malawi Institute Of Tourism

The Malawi Institute of Tourism was established as a Government Hotel Training School in 1975 with the assistance from the International Labour Organisation.  The School was offering up-grading courses to employees who were already working in the tourism and hotel industry.  The up-grading courses were mainly in Food Production, Food and Beverage service, Front Office Operations and Housekeeping.
In addition to the up-grading courses, the Government Hotel Training School started offering one and half years certificate courses in Food Production, Food & Beverage Service, and one year course in Front Office Operations and Accommodation Services/ Housekeeping.
The Government Hotel Training school was then operating under the Department of Tourism in the Ministry responsible for Tourism.  In a move to improve the operations of the school Government decided to turn the school into an autonomous body.  In 1997 a Trust Deed was declared.  The Government Hotel Training School was converted into the Malawi Institute of Tourism and a Trust Fund was established.
