Post Graduate Certificate in Education

Preamble

Subject to the provision of the General Regulations, the following Special Regulations of the Institute shall apply:

Entrance Requirements

The minimum requirements for entry to the Post-Graduate Certificate in Education shall be a recognised University Degree with an overall C grade or better, in which one or more teaching subjects have been studied. The applicant must have a C grade or better in the teaching subject(s).

Prpgramme Structure

This is a one year programme comprising of a total of 12 modules.

PGCE Programme Structure

This is a one year programme comprising of a total of 12 modules.
The curriculum studies programme shall reflect a subject or subjects which the students have majored in at their undergraduate level.
Students with a single teaching subject major and without a teaching minor will be required to take the courses EDC 110 (Curriculum Theory) and EDF300 (History and Philosophy of Education).
(a)       Students shall be required to complete and pass a total of 10 weeks of supervised Teaching Practice.
 
(b)  (i)          If teaching Practice is interrupted for medical reasons, the Institute of Distance Education must be informed in writing without delay, and supporting documents must be submitted in order for the Institute to make a recommendation to the Senate.
(ii)        A student who is prevented by official circumstance/s from going on Teaching Practice, which must be supported by evidence, shall apply in writing for permission to defer Teaching Practice, and giving details to the Institute of Distance Education to make a recommendation to the Senate, before Teaching Practice begins.
(iii)       The Senate upon receiving a recommendation from the Institute of Distance Education (b)(i) and (b)(ii) above may grant permission to defer or postpone the Teaching Practice.  Otherwise no student should stay away from Teaching Practice without the written approval of the Senate.
(iv)       Normally a student on Teaching Practice shall be expected to begin and complete Teaching Practice in the school of his/her initial placement.
 
(c)        The pass mark for supervised Teaching Practice shall be 50% and above.  A student who fails to complete Teaching Practice and/or fails to obtain a mark of 50% and above shall not be awarded the certificate.
 
(d)        A student who either fails to complete Teaching Practice or fails to obtain 50% or better, shall be required to repeat Teaching Practice of the same duration during a period specified by the Institute of Distance Education.  The period within which to repeat Teaching Practice will be in accordance with the academic general regulations.
 
(e)        A student who fails to obtain 50% or better on repeating twice shall be discontinued from the programme.
