Botswana, March 2022: The price of electricity is 0.094 U.S. Dollars per kWh for households and 0.111 U.S. Dollars for businesses which includes all components of the electricity bill such as the cost of power, distribution, and taxes. For comparison, the average price of electricity in the world for that period is 0.140 U.S. Dollars per kWh for households and 0.135 U.S. Dollars for businesses.

For households, the displayed number is calculated at the average annual level of household electricity consumption. For businesses, the displayed data point uses 1,000,000 kWh annual consumption.

Where does Botswana get its electricity?

Botswana’s energy capacity is thermal, produced mostly in coal-fired plants with a few small diesel generators in rural areas. The 132 MW Morupule coal-fired station generates most of the domestic electricity supply. More than 50 percent of Botswana’s power requirements are imported from South Africa and Zambia.
