The College was established under legal authority granted by a provision in the University of Malawi Act of 1965; the College is now governed by the University of Malawi Amendment Act of 1998.

The College has adopted a set of values that are shared among all staff and students and thereby offer them some guidance as they fulfill their respective responsibilities. These values are expected to drive Polytechnic’s culture and priorities. The core values are:

Students at the Polytechnic are taught by qualified faculty members, most of whom have initially been trained locally up to the undergraduate level, and then pursued graduate training at institutions in other countries in Africa, Europe, North America, and even Asia and Australia. There are 256 faculty members at the Polytechnic. Of these, 42 have doctorate degrees, 150 have master’s degrees, and 64 have bachelor’s degrees. It takes quite a bit of academic productivity to become a professor within the UNIMA system. Perhaps not surprisingly, there are only 2 professors at the Polytechnic, and there are 5 associate professors. There are 38 senior lecturers, 104 lecturers and 48 assistant lecturers.
The College caters to students of both genders who come from all three regions of the country Northern, Central, and Southern. International students are also welcome to enroll. There are currently 4777 students enrolled at the Polytechnic, of which 3166 are male and 1611 are female.
