WELCOME TO THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH

The major cause of morbidity and mortality in Malawi are diseases which are preventable. For this reason, the Ministry of Health and population formulated a community based and community oriented health delivery system whose guiding principle is primary Health Care. Health promotion for disease prevention and control is the cornerstone of the health care system, hence the need for health professional who are highly qualified and whose basic duty is in the field of public health to make this a reality.

Bachelor of Science degree in Public Health students will be trained and intensely committed to meeting the challenges of the above mentioned immense task. To this end, the graduate will be well versed in Public health subjects such as environmental health.
Prevention and control of communicable and non – communicable diseases, epidemiology and research methodology, as well as health prevention and management of health services is paramount, if we are to achieve a comprehensive and better health care. Curative health services alone cannot be effective in promoting health; but complement to preventive medicine

 PHILOSOPHY
One of the most required human needs is health; the program will encourage the production of graduate who will be equipped with knowledge, attitudes and skills in preventing and curing diseases/conditions in order to promote health. The graduate will work in semi-independent capacity, integrating all health services using Primary Health Care approach and encouraging practices that promote spiritual, physical and mental wholeness through correcting, controlling, and caring for various aspects that affect the health of the people

 VISION
The department endeavours to contribute to the improvement of health of the populations locally, nationally and internationally through excellence in research, teaching and training in Public health, working in collaboration with partners from all relevant disciplines and institutions.

 OBJECTIVES
The programme in Public health is designed to:

Equip the student with a comprehensive understanding of Public health,
including health problems and health care systems
 Train students as Public health professionals for local and international local and international careers.
 Prepare health professionally who are specialists on surveillance and control of communicable diseases.
Equip students with skills in scientific research and writing that will enable them to work together with a biomedical team
 Prepare individuals who understand the importance of the environment on health
Train Public health professionals in the integration of faith and Public
health practice
Provide students with a foundation for continuation into advanced degrees.

 DURATION OF THE PROGRAMME
Four Years of full – time study are required

Bachelor of science degree (MLS and PH);Malawi certificate of Education (MSCE) or its equivalent with Six credits including Biology,English, Mathematics and Physical Science.
For Diploma Programmes; MSCE or its Equivalent with 6 credits including Biology, English, Mathematics and Physical Science
For Certificate in Clinical Medicine; MSCE or its Equivalent with two credits from Biology, Mathematics or Physical Science
