DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY DEGREES IN COMMERCE

The Malawi Polytechnic, a constituent college of the University of Malawi introduced Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree programmes in the Faculty of Commerce. These are Entrepreneurship,Strategic Management and Financial Management.

PhD in Entrepreneurship

This programme will equip and expose students to relevant knowledge and understanding of entrepreneurship. Students will gain insight into the unique nature, functioning, problems and existence of small and large businesses. Topics of research include small business management, business plan, family business, creativity and innovation, entrepreneurship policy, etc. The aim of this programme is to facilitate entrepreneurial decision-making of the highest standard, the continual development of a high level of cognitive knowledge, skills and attitudes and the development of current research to make significant intellectual contribution to entrepreneurship as a body of knowledge and provide innovative solutions to the day to day problems faced by entrepreneurs.

PhD in Strategic Management

The PhD degree in Strategic Management is geared towards providing students with specialist expertise in the field of strategic management and corporate planning. Such students are en couraged to study the problems and issues facing general managers and administrators who must formulate and implement strategies for organizations/institutions in uncertain and ambiguous environments.
The aim of this programme is to facilitate and promote the institutionalisation of strategic management issues as the modern environment keeps on changing and that managers should adapt such turbulent changes.

PhD in Financial Management

PhD in Financial Management is geared towards providing students with specialist expertise in the field of financial investment and management in order to facilitate and promote financial decision-making of the highest standard. It is worth noting that finance is a key element of any business/institution and without it, no business/institution can survive.
The aim of this programme is to facilitate the continual development of a high level of cognitive knowledge, skills and attitudes and the development of financial decision-making applications. This PhD will ultimately provide the current research to contribute to the development and understanding of a specific field of interest in financial management.

PhD in Commerce – University Malawi | Polytechnic Admission criteria

Candidates with a Masters’ or MPhil degree from a recognized university will be considered for registration into the PhD programme if the faculty criteria are fulfilled.

PhD in Commerce – University Malawi | Polytechnicv Publication requirement for PhD candidates

As a study requirement, PhD candidates will be required to publish a minimum of three (3) peer-reviewed papers in peer-reviewed recognized journals and/or provide evidence of 3 prepared manuscripts ‘accepted for publication/in press during the time of their PhD research programme in order to be awarded the doctoral degree.

PhD in Commerce – University Malawi | Polytechnic Programme fees

Fees for the programmes are US$5,500 payable in Malawi Kwacha equivalent. The fees will cater for tuition, supervision and examination. Research expenses will vary from candidate to candidate based on nature of research. All the research expenses(consumables, surveys , out sourced tests etc) will be taken care of by the candidate. Further, living expenses, medicals and other costs are a responsibility of the candidate. The College will, from time to time, provide indicative costs according to the prevailing market conditions.
