luanar Dietetic students begin supervised practice rotations
The first cohort of dietetics students in Malawi have successfully completed 12 months of training and have begun eight months of supervised practice in clinical nutrition (paediatrics, adult internal medicine, surgery and critical care), community nutrition, food service management and research.
The students will complete 1200 hours of training at sites, including, Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH), Blantyre Adventist Hospital (BAH).
As a stopgap measure to address the shortages in resources for surgery and critical care nutrition in Malawi, students will complete five weeks of rotation under the supervision of the University of Cape town (UCT) in Cape town, South Africa.
The first group of three students has already arrived in Cape town and are settling into their rotations well. The second group has begun part of their food service management and adult internal medicine rotations at Blantyre Adventist Hospital, under the supervision of Mr Honest Chirwa (RD).
Students must meet entry level competencies for each supervised practice module in order meet requirements to be registered by the Malawi Medical council (MCM) as the first Malawi trained dietitians.
