Program Summary
Malawi is one of the smallest countries in Africa and also one of the poorest nations on the planet with 90% subsisting below the poverty line. Landlocked between Tanzania, Zambia and Mozambique, it’s also one of the world’s least developed countries and remains heavily dependent on international aid. Many initiatives have been put into place to gain financial independence and improve conditions in key areas such as education and healthcare.
Most of Malawi’s population is rural as the country’s economy is largely based in agriculture. Conditions in many rural areas are harsh, only 57% have access to clean water and for many, access to health and education services means a walk of many hours.
This project will place you with an NGO based in rural north Malawi, an extremely remote region on the edge of the immense lake Malawi. The area has a severe lack of infrastructure; there are no roads, no electricity and very little phone reception. The main objective of the NGO is to provide resources and material to help the local population achieve social and economic growth, as well as provide better education and health care. Since 2010 the NGO has constructed a community centre which runs a library, nursery, youth club and academic tutorials, introduced renewable energy, re-opened the health clinic, built an ambulance boat, constructed science laboratories at the secondary schools, set up a student sponsorship scheme and much more.

Program Highlights
