Chancellor College: University of Malawi Human Ecology’s Fashion Friday

The Department of Human Ecology at Chancellor College on hosted a fashion show on the evening of 9th of November, 2018 at the College’s Great Hall. The theme of the fashion show was ‘Historical References’ and focused on attire that had been inspired from the 18th to the 20th centuries. Students from the Department had been given the task of demonstrating the way in which fashion from bygone eras continues to inspire current trends, and they took up the challenge with unique interpretations of fashion. There was, for instance, men’s wear which had been inspired by French and German attire in the 1870s, and ladies’ wear inspired by ‘the frilly look’ of the Victorian era. The categories also included children’s wear. Speaking at the function, the Guest of Honour, Principal of Chancellor College, Professor Richard Tambulasi, commended the Department for having come up with the event, and emphasized the way in which clothes also a narrative. He also applauded the spirit of entrepreneurship that was displayed by the organisers. The event was spiced with poetry as well as traditional dances and a play from the Department of Fine and Performing Arts.
