Mzuzu University Reopening Date for 2021

I would like to welcome all continuing students to the University as it opens its 2020/21 Academic Year on Monday, 24th May 2021.
All students should take note of the following information:
A. Academic Calendar
i. The First Semester of the Academic Year will run for 16 weeks: 13 weeks teaching, 1 week self-study, and 2 weeks examinations as follows:
• 24th May 2021 – Arrival of all continuing face-to face students
• 24th to 28th May 2021 – Official registration period
• 26th May 2021 – Classes begin
• 10th June 2021 – Last day for late registration
• 20th Aug. 2021 – Classes end
• 23rd to 27th Aug. 2021 – Self-study week
• 30th Aug. to 10th Sept. 2021 – End of semester examination
• 10th Sept. 2021 – End of first semester
ii. Students who will fail to register by Friday, 28th May 2021 will start accumulating late registration fee of K2,000.00 per day.
iii. Note that no student shall be registered after 10th June 2021. Those who will not have registered by this date will not be allowed to attend classes.

B. Academic Assessment Results for the Previous Semester Senate is scheduled to meet on Thursday, 20th May 2021 to consider end of semester academic assessment results for the previous semester.
A separate announcement regarding the results and deferred/supplementary examinations will be made following the Senate meeting.
C. Teaching Timetable
The teaching timetable will be published for your attention with an appropriate announcement. Please familiarise yourselves with it.
D. Orientation for the New Upgrading Students A special announcement regarding the orientation for new upgrading
students who are joining continuing classes has been made separately.
E. Fees
Please note the following points regarding payment of fees:
i) Fees can be paid in full or in two instalments at the beginning of each of the two semesters in an academic year;
ii) At least half of the required fees per academic year should be paid to be registered;
iii) Students with carry-over fee balances should clear their fee balances first before reporting for registration. No student with carry-over fee balances from previous semester(s) shall be registered;
iv) Fees may change with or without notice;
v) Fees should be deposited using bank facilities as detailed in the relevant section in this memorandum;
vi) When depositing fees, please indicate on the bank deposit slip the students name, registration number, programme and level of study;
vii) Bank deposit slips and transactional IDs should be presented to the Cashier’s Office in Finance to be issued with a receipt. Name of the student, student’s registration number, programme of study, level of study should be presented on the deposit slip;
viii) Students who do not have the required fees should complete a withdrawal application form before they return home to mobilise the required funds. The withdrawal will be on financial grounds. Such students may return to campus before expiry of late registration on 10th June 2021. Those who will not fulfil the requirements will have
their places reserved for one academic year.

ix) Students with special circumstances on fees should write the University Registrar and should wait for feedback before they start attending classes.
F. Bank Accounts for Payment of Fees
i) Undergraduate generic students should pay at least K200,000.00 to fulfil the registration requirements before being authorised to attend classes and access other services.

G. Students on Higher Education Students Loans and Grants Board (HESLGB) Loans Students on HESLGB provisional loans list will be registered provisionally pending the outcome of the vetting process and
signing of the bond forms. The HESLGB officials will visit Mzuzu University for a vetting, students’ orientation and bonding processes as follows:

Vetting – 24th May 2021 – 8:00am to 10:00pm
• To be done jointly with administrators who will be required to have lists of all students who: have been withdrawn; have disciplinary cases; are repeating; are pursuing

diploma/weekend/mature entry programme and are on other
scholarships.
• All students who: have been withdrawn, have disciplinary cases; are not needy; are repeating, are pursing
diploma/weekend/mature entry programmes and are on scholarship will be removed from the provisionally approved
list. Furthermore, other needy and deserving students who were not included on the list will be identified for management consideration and replacement for those who will be removed.
Orientation – 24th May 2021 – 10:00am to 12:00noon
• All students who are interested in applying for the loans will be expected to attend this session
• The institution is required to notify students in advance.
• Depending on the number of students, the institution will be expected to prepare a PA system and a projector for power
point presentation.
• The orientation will take the students through the online application through Students Management Information
System (SFMIS).
Bonding – 24th May 2021 – 1pm to 4:30pm and 25th to 28th May 2021 – 8:00am to 4:00pm
• All students on the final loan list after vetting will be expected to dully complete and submit bonding forms.
• Students will be expected to provide accurate, active and updated personal bank account details.
• Students who fail to go through this process will be deemed to have declined the loan offer.
H. Registration
i. The registration process begins with payment of fees. Therefore, students will not be registered until all fees and other financial obligations are paid as required;
ii. The University is in the process of migrating from its old student management information system (MIS) which has become obsolete. The University is developing a new system with assistance from external service providers;
iii. There will be no online registration at the beginning of the semester. The University will administer a manual
registration instead. All students are advised to get printed registration forms from the Porters Lodge and the Registry and proceed with manual registration;
