The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Malawi (ICAM) is a professional accountancy body in Malawi which was established out of a merger of the Public Accountants Examination Council of Malawi (PAEC) and the Society of Accountants in Malawi (SOCAM). This followed the passing and coming into effect of the Public Accountants and Auditors Act (Act No.5 of 2013). ICAM is a full member of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) and the Pan African Federation of Accountants (PAFA)

Institute Of Chartered Accountants In Malawi Courses Offered

Certificate in Financial Accounting (CIFA)
A very good beginner’s course that prepares one for clerical accounting work usually carried out by Accounts Assistants. This is also a stepping stone of the Accounting Technician Programme. The course comprises of four (4) papers and candidates are required to sit for all the 4 papers at the first sitting. They are also required to complete the course within four sitting – a period of two years.
Entry Requirements
The minimum entry qualification is the Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) or its equivalent
Accounting Technician
This is the most sought after qualification that prepares staff that provides vital support to the work of middle management accounting officers. It is also a stepping stone to the Chartered Accountant (CA) qualification. A holder of this qualification is eligible to register with Malawi Accountants Board (MAB) as a Diplomate member after completing the required practical training.
It has 12 papers assessed through three hour written examinations.
Has a flexible method of study. Candidates are allowed a maximum of 10 years to complete the programme.
Entry requirements
The following are the minimum entry requirements;

  • The Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) or equivalent with credit passes in English and Mathematics.
  • Certificate in Financial Accounting (CIFA).
The CA (M) qualification has three tiers as follows: the knowledge level, the professional level and the Advanced level.
