Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) is one of the six institutions which has benefitted from the six buses which were procured through cashgate.
Speaking during the handover ceremony of the buses at the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs on Wednesday 7th September 2016, LUANAR Vice Chancellor, Professor GeorgeKanyama Phiri thanked government for the bus saying this will go a long way to assist both students and staff who needed proper means of transportation.
“This bus has come at an opportune time, the only bus that we had was involved in an accident and after that the students has been using a lorry hence the coming in of this bus has given us a relief ,” said Professor Kanyama Phiri.
In his remarks, the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Mr Samuel Tembenu, who handed over the buses said the six buses has been given to the institutions as one way of returning public funds which were stolen.
“Money was stolen from the public purse and was used to procure six buses. These buses were meant to be for private use of a group of people who conceived and carefully executed the cashgate plan,” said the Minister.
He said the beneficiaries were identified on the basis of real and immediate need.
“The applications were many but we could only give to these few institutions which include LUANAR, Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST), Malawi Police Service, The Prison Department and the Department of Civil Aviation,” he said.
Apart from LUANAR and MUST, the first four buses were already handed over to the other four institutions.
