Nursing Education Loan Agreements (NELAs)

Traditional Nursing Education Loan Agreement (NELA)
Eligibility: All Students are Welcome to Apply
Application Deadline: Evening/Weekend Level 1 – January 1
      Weekday & DDPN Level 1 – April 1
St. Joseph’s Health Hospital offers a Nursing Education Loan that gives nursing students the opportunity to defer one year of tuition for 200 level courses by signing an employment contract to remain employed as a registered nurse for three years full-time or six years part-time after graduation. Qualified applicants may apply for this deferment after the midpoint of their second semester at St. Joseph’s College of Nursing. 
Additional Nursing Education Loan Agreement Dual Degree Option 
(Current NELA Recipient)
Eligibility: DDPN Students Only
Application Deadline: Level 2 Only, February 1
A combined Nursing Education Loan option for students who are a current recipient of the NELA and are interested in an additional deferment of their fourth year of tuition at Le Moyne College by signing an employment contract for four years full-time or eight years part-time after graduation from SJHCON.  The student is obligated to work as a registered nurse at SJHH while completing the fourth year of the DDPN program as a student at Le Moyne College.  Qualified applicants may apply for this deferment after the midpoint of their second year, second semester at St. Joseph’s College of Nursing. 
Exclusive Nursing Education Loan Agreement Dual Degree Option 
(Fourth Year Only)
Eligibility: DDPN Students Only
Application Deadline: Level 2 Only, February 1
A stand-alone Nursing Education Loan for students interested in tuition deferment for their fourth and final year (fall and spring semesters exclusively) of study at Le Moyne College to qualified students in exchange for the student’s agreement to work for St. Joseph’s Health Hospital for three years of full-time or six years part-time after graduation from SJHCON.  The student is obligated to work as a registered nurse at SJHH while completing the fourth year of the DDPN program as a student at Le Moyne College.  Qualified applicants may apply for this deferment after the midpoint of their second year, second semester at St. Joseph’s College of Nursing.

St. Joseph’s Health Hospital Auxiliary Scholarships: 

Sister Wilhelmnia Scholarship

The Sister Wilhelmina Scholarship is named after Sister Wilhelmina, who was appointed the Director of the St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in 1943.  She became the hospital’s Administrator and Treasurer in 1951. The auxiliary of St. Joseph’s Health Hospital awards two partial scholarships to incoming students every year; one to a day option student and one to a weekend option student.  A 3.0 GPA must be maintained to retain this scholarship.

Sister Mary Obrist Scholarship

The auxiliary of St. Joseph’s Health Hospital awards a full tuition scholarship to a second year Dual Degree Partnership in Nursing (DDPN) student who has maintained a 3.0 grade point average at the end of the first year at Le Moyne College. The recipient must also be the recipient of a Le Moyne College Scholarship to be eligible. Maintenance of eligibility requirements are that the recipient must maintain a B+ or higher in nursing coursework and demonstrate satisfactory progress in the clinical portion of each nursing course at the completion of each semester. The recipient must also demonstrate engagement and commitment to the profession and College through participation in one or more of the following: recruitment events, committee membership, peer mentoring, support group membership, other volunteer activities. An additional condition of this scholarship is that the recipient may not accept an Educational Contract with St. Joseph’s Health Hospital. 

Note: Any incoming student may apply for the auxiliary and alumni scholarships listed above after acceptance into the program.

St. Joseph’s College of Nursing Alumni Association Scholarships:

Sister Mary Sheila Daly Memorial Scholarship

Each year, the Alumni Association awards two $2,500 scholarships in memory of Sister Mary Sheila Daly, past school director (1956–1974), to two incoming students. Students receive $1,250 the first year and can renew the scholarship for the second year if they maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 each semester and perform community service that reflects the mission of nursing and that of St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center. 

Dual Degree Partnership in Nursing (DDPN) Scholarship

The alumni awards this $1,000 per semester scholarship to a second year DDPN student who has maintained a 3.0 grade point average at the end of his/her first year at Le Moyne College. The recipient must maintain a B+ average at St. Joseph’s College of Nursing. 

George & Loretta Byrnes Memorial Scholarship

The Alumni Association awards this $750 scholarship to an incoming freshman who demonstrates academic merit and financial need. Recipient must remain in good academic standing.

The Vivian Rippin Scholarship

To Benefit Children/Grandchildren of Deceased/Retired St. Joseph’s College of Nursing Faculty/Staff Scholarship. This scholarship provides a full tuition scholarship to a child or grandchild of a former faculty/staff member who was an employee of the College of Nursing for a minimum of 10 consecutive years. Applicants eligible to apply for this scholarship: 

  • An accepted student into a full time College of Nursing option
  • Children, grandchildren of a retired or deceased faculty or staff member of the college of nursing. (Parent or grandparent was employed by the college for a minimum of 10 consecutive years).
  • Applicant has not been the prior recipient of an award or scholarship awarded by the College of Nursing or St. Joseph’s Hospital.
  • Must be in need of financial aid and able to provide proof of need.*

Scholarship to be applied to cost of College of Nursing tuition cost only, for four semesters of the Weekday option or three terms of the Accelerated Weekend option or DDPN Accelerated Weekend option. 
Criteria to maintain scholarship: 

  • Recipient must maintain a 2.0 cumulative grade point average per semester or term.
  • Recipient must complete 5hrs. of volunteer service per semester/term for an organization whose mission and purpose is aligned with the mission of the College of Nursing and St. Joseph’s Health Hospital.
    • Must submit written proof of volunteer hours performed prior to the end of each semester/term, documented on the organization’s letterhead and signed by the person that supervised volunteer hours served.

This scholarship will be awarded annually to one incoming student.

Financial Aid Award for International Students

The purpose is to establish a scholarship fund at the College for the RN education of international students. These scholarships will be based on a student’s financial need and GPA once enrolled. Scholarships shall fund costs related to tuition only with the amount to be determined based on availability of scholarship funds. Decisions related to funding these scholarships will be determined on a semester by semester basis. 

Student Selection/Requirements:

One award will be awarded to an eligible international student annually. 

The College shall select qualified international students who have been accepted to the College and demonstrates financial need. The criteria for selection shall include: 
A student must: 

  • Demonstrate financial need;
  • Demonstrate he/she is qualified to enroll in post secondary education;
  • Be enrolled or accepted at the College as a regular student;
  • Be a non-resident alien on a non-immigrant visa not eligible to receive Title IV assistance;
  • Meet satisfactory academic progress standards set by the College; and
  • Certify that he/she will use the scholarship funds only for tuition at the College.

The College’s Scholarship Committee will select students according to its established policies which require scholarships be awarded in a non-discriminatory fashion in terms of racial preference, be based on financial need and/or merit. The College shall notify a student once selected. Scholarships shall be funded by the Vivian Rippin Scholarship Fund. 

Maintaining a Scholarship

To maintain a scholarship, a student will be required to: 

  • Maintain full time status, pursuant to the College’s requirements;
  • Maintain a grade of C or higher in all coursework; and
  • Apply each semester for a scholarship.
Termination of a Scholarship

A scholarship may be terminated by the Scholarship Committee in the event that a student: 

  • Fails to maintain full time status any semester;
  • Fails to maintain a grade of C or higher in all courses taken in the nursing program; or
  • Fails more than 2 major clinical nursing courses.
  • This scholarship will be awarded annually to one incoming student.

Other Available Awards & Scholarships

Opportunities for awards and scholarships for the second year of nursing may be available and awarded at the Commitment to Nursing ceremony, which is held at the end of the student’s first year at St. Joseph’s.

Hospital Employment: Student Nursing Assistants

After successful completion of the first semester and a total of 120 hours in the Clinical Learning Lab, students are eligible to apply for work as student nursing assistants at St. Joseph’s Health Hospital. Students may apply to live in the college’s residence hall if they wish to work through the summer break. 


Outside Scholarship Opportunities 

The New York State Division of Veterans Affairs provides educational benefits for veterans of the US Armed Forces and children and spouses of veterans who suffered a service-related death or disability or are missing in action. For more information, contact your local Veterans Administration Office.

The US Bureau of Indian Affairs offers a Higher Education Grant to eligible American Indian/Alaska Native scholars entering college. A student must be a member of, or at least one-quarter degree Indian blood descendant of an American Indian tribe that is eligible for the special programs and services provided by the United States through the Bureau of Indian Affairs; must be accepted for admission to an institution of higher education that confers associate’s or bachelor’s degrees; and must demonstrate financial need. An application is available with the education officer of the affiliated tribe.
