Background: 
Extension Department is one of the four departments in Faculty of Development Studies at Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR). Its activities include conducting research, teaching and outreach. The Department trains extension, rural and international development professionals to equip them with knowledge, skills, and research capabilities that seek to provide solutions to current issues facing delivery of extension services, and rural development. It offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses: BSc in Agricultural Extension, MSc in Rural Development and Extension, and PhD in Rural Development and Extension. 
Position: Lecturer / Senior Lecturer /Associate Professor/Professor in Rural Development and Extension.

Overall responsibilities
Extension Department seeks to appoint academic staff members that will teach and supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students to capacitate them to deal with social and development issues facing agricultural extension and rural development, including related areas. The two positions are tenable at Bunda College of LUANAR located in Lilongwe.

The successful applicant will engage in research, teaching, and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students’ research in the fields of rural development and agricultural extension. Further to this, s/he will be conducting outreach activities and establishing linkages between the Department and relevant stakeholders in the public, private, and NGO sectors locally and internationally. 

Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
a. Teaching and assessing under-graduate (BSc) and post-graduate students (MSc and PhD).
b. Supervising post-graduate and under-graduate research projects.
c. Developing teaching and learning materials.
d. Contributing to curriculum development.
e. Conducting research in agricultural extension and rural development.
f. Developing research grants proposals and conducting research.
g. Conducting outreach activities with communities around the university, and within and outside the country.
h. Participate in committees’ work in support of departmental, college, and university activities.
i. Conduct any other activities as necessary for the department and the university.

Qualifications and key required key competencies
The successful applicant should possess a MSc / PhD in Rural and International Development; Extension Education; Adult Education; Sociology; Agricultural Innovations; or a field closely related to the position. Among other things, the candidate should possess these qualifications:
a. Knowledge in the social dimensions of food and agricultural systems, rural development, agricultural extension, social (action) research, community environments, and participatory methodologies. 
b. High quality social and development research skills, s/he have experience in supervising post-graduate research students, and teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels is essential.
c. Ability to develop high-quality research proposals and competitive in terms of acquiring external research.
d. Ability to publish in high-quality academic journals.

Remuneration
Salary and benefits for this position shall be in line with the University (LUANAR) policy and structure for staff salaries and benefits as contained in the conditions of service.
