As part of its Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in Artisanal Mining project, IMPACT and its partner, Zimbabwe Environmental Law Association (ZELA), are conducting a baseline study to analyze the socio-economic conditions of mining communities in the district of Mberengwa and Zvishavane in Midlands province.

We are seeking an organization with experience coordinating and completing data collection within projects.
IMPACT is a global leader in developing innovative approaches to improve how natural resources are managed in areas where security and human rights are at risk. For over thirty years, IMPACT has collaborated with local partners to promote policy dialogue and solutions for sustainable development.

Active in three countries, including Zimbabwe, the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in Artisanal Mining project aims to support women in the sector overcome obstacles that prevent them from fully benefiting from their work. ZELA, a long-time IMPACT partner, is responsible for implementing project activities in the Midlands province.

The Zimbabwe Environmental Law Association (ZELA) is a public interest non-governmental organisation which promotes environmental justice, sustainable and equitable use of natural resources, democracy and good governance in the natural resources and environment sector.

ZELA seeks to accomplish its mission through legal and policy research, advocacy, impact litigation, conflict resolution and civic education.
This call for applications aims to select an organization with experience in data collection in order to complete a baseline study of the project. Data collection will include a survey with approximately one hundred socio-economic questions to be given to a random sample of individuals working in mining sites and living in the surrounding communities.

The sample size is calculated using a confidence interval of 90% based on sampling without replacement to ensure that a person is not selected more than once. The data collection team, made up of an equal number of women and men, will go into the field to interview the targeted population using tablets.

Data collection also includes a sample of decision makers with direct or indirect responsibility in matters of empowering women in the mining sector at the local and provincial levels in Zimbabwe. The exact sample size for the two categories remains to be determined.
Position summary

More specifically, the activities to coordinate and complete for the data collection include the following: 3 to 4 days of training on the appropriate collection methodology; Data collection at a mining site and surrounding communities in person; Data collection from representatives of institutions and authorities, either in person or by telephone; A daily report of the number of interviews conducted and issues encountered and Daily download of interviews to a server.

Qualifications
Experience collecting data from communities and various levels of authorities; Experience working on gender equality issues, ideally in the artisanal mining sector; Ability to deploy a team of 6 people (3 women, 3 men); Experience working with electronic data collection tools; Legal status to operate in Zimbabwe; Availability to work between March 01 and March 10, 2020 (data collection period: approximately 6 to 10 days).
