The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture is responsible for the development and promotion of tourism-related activities in Ghana. Its functions among other things are:
- Diversify and expand the tourism industry for economic development,
- Develop a competitive creative arts industry
- Promote culture throughout the development process
- Enhance Ghana’s international image and influence
- Promote Ghana’s political and economic interests abroad
- Integrate the Ghanaian diaspora in national development process
Additionally, we are to help mainstream tourism in district development plans;
develop palace museums to preserve national culture and thereby promote tourism in communities; institute measures to curtail emerging threats such as pandemics and promote the establishment of tourism clubs in all educational institutions.
The functions enumerated above are aimed at optimising the socio-economic growth of the country through tourism-related activities and the promotion of environmental impact for the benefit of deprived communities with tourist sites in the country.
Ghana as an attraction destination for tourists
Ghana has a warm tropical climate and experiences an all year round warm sunny weather. The country can boost of many varieties of wildlife, natural waterfalls such as the Kintampo Falls in the Brong Ahafo Region, the Wli and Tagbo Falls in the Volta Region all located in a thick forest areas of the country
Along the coastline, one can find a beautiful scenery of lined up coconut trees, fine sandy beaches and elsewhere, evergreen forest caves, coconut trees that have are lined up, fine sandy beaches, ever-green forests, caves, mountains and rivers. Again there are also craters made out of meteorite which have given rise to lakes such as Lake Bosomtwe found in the Ashanti region. All these act as attractions, making Ghana a preferred tourist destination.
Indeed data available, shows that there has been a recorded growth in tourism arrivals to the country. From a baseline of 969,156 in 2017, international arrivals made a slight decrease to 956,372 in 2018 due to the effect of the ebola pandemic and increased to 1,130,307 in 2019. Again from a baseline of US$1,804.56 in 2017, Tourism receipts increased from US$2,589.3 in 2018 to 3,312.93 in 2019.
In terms of employment, total jobs created in both formal and informal tourism enterprises increased from 438,000 in 2016 to 506,967 in 2018
Domestic Tourism also increased from 1,353,253 in 2016 to 1,420,915 in 2017 with corresponding receipts from GH₵ 3,210,565 in 2016 to GH 3, 531,622 in 2017.
Under the creative industry, government set up an Interim Creative Arts Council to harmonize the various interest groups and support with the preparation of a Creative Arts Industry Bill to be laid in parliament very soon.
The Bill is being finalized by the Attorney General’s Department pursuant to recommendations for amendment by Cabinet for submission to Parliament within the first quarter of 2020 to be passed into law.
