Training and Research Unit of Excellence (TRUE) is a young and vibrant research group at the College of Medicine specializing in high quality malaria and anemia research. Among other research studies, the unit will conduct a new study in Intermittent Preventive Treatment with DHA-piperaquine for malaria in pregnancy in areas with high sulphadoxine-pyrimethamine resistance in Africa in Chikhwawa and Mangochi hospitals.

Job Summary
To carry out laboratory tests and procedures at the site as designated by the Site Coordinator and Scientific Leader and to prepare specimen for testing and storage, documentation and record keeping.
Duties and Responsibilities

  •  To respect patient confidentiality and not divulge patient details or results to persons other than those immediately professionally responsible for the patient’s medical care or to those involved in research thereof.
  •  To work only under guidelines and protocols (S.O.Ps) as laid out in the study.
  • To work using safe practice, respecting the safety of fellow workers at all times
  • To attend seminars and meetings both external and internal as available and as requested.
  • To carry out laboratory tests in accordance with research protocols (S.O.Ps) as set out in the study protocol.
  • To take blood samples from participants and process all biological samples in accordance with set procedures.
  • To be aware of, and work using the Quality Control protocols, both internal and external where appropriate.
  • To keep both paper and electronic records where appropriate.
  • To prepare and store specimens according to set protocols.
  • To monitor equipment at regular intervals according to set protocols where appropriate.
  • To keep all bench surfaces and equipment clean in all areas.
  • To check stocks and report stock levels to the appropriate member of staff.
  • To work within the Health and Safety protocols of the study site.
  • To carry out any other duty deemed to be reasonable, as may be assigned from time to time by the Study coordinator, Site Investigator or PI
  • To participate in regular study team meetings to evaluate and plan study activities.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology and 2 years research experience.
  • Valid GCP, GCLP certificate and prior experience in clinical trials of Malaria in Pregnancy would be an added advantage.
